Summary

The article discusses the importance of balancing self-care with prosocial behavior, advocating for a lifestyle that is both self-centered and prosocial.

Abstract

The article presents three lifestyle alternatives: a prosocial life focused on serving others, a self-centered life driven by personal values that may harm others, and a balanced approach that combines self-interest with prosocial actions. It emphasizes that neglecting personal needs can hinder one's ability to help others and that self-centered values, if harmful, can lead to negative societal consequences. The author suggests that individuals should prioritize self-care and health while also assisting others, offering a prayer for those striving to maintain this balance, and providing a humorous anecdote about social media addiction.

Opinions

  • Living a solely prosocial life can be problematic if personal needs are neglected, as it may ultimately limit one's capacity to care for others.
  • A self-centered life, while adhering to a set of values, can cause harm to both others and oneself, as seen in various groups, including motorcycle gangs and certain religious or business entities.

In this brief piece I suggest that there are 3 alternatives. A prosocial life; A self-centered life; A self-centered, prosocial life.

If you are living a prosocial life. You have chosen to live a life based on the value of serving others. While this is admirable it tends to be problematic. If you do not look after your own needs you will be unable to care for the needs of others.

If you are living a self-centered life. You may believe that you are acting in accordance to values. On some level this is true. The members of a motorcycle gang follow a strict code of values. However, the values that they have chose to live by cause harm to others. Although they refuse to believe it be true, their values cause harm to themselves as well.

It is true whether you are a member of a motorcycle gang or a religious group that behaves in a non-Christian manner even if you call yourself Christian. It is true whether you are a leader and businessman who values profits over people or a reality television star who happens to be president of an unfortunate country.

If a significant portion of the population chose to live a self-centered existence, their so-called values lead to very unpleasant consequences.

For those of you who have chosen a self-centered and prosocial life, my prayers go out to you. Take care of yourself and stay healthy. Help as many others as you can and remember that if the coming violence becomes overwhelming, you may be able to find shelter with your northern neighbour.
