Are You a Spiritual Badass?

The benefits of embodying that term in your own life.

Friends who know me well sometimes refer to me as a spiritual badass. I usually laugh and brush the term off, but I recently decided to probe the origin of that particular statement.

I started off with some definitions:

Spiritual: Wikipedia: ‘A subjective experience of a sacred dimension. The deepest value and meanings by which people live. An encounter with one’s own inner dimension’.

This led me to the etymology of the word spirit.

SPIRIT: ‘The animating or vital principle derived from old French ‘espirit’ which comes from ‘spiritus’ Latin origin, meaning soul, courage, vigor and breath — related to ‘spirare’ defined as to breathe’.

Then I checked out many definitions of a modern badass and agreed with the top five traits commonly demonstrated in a badass.

#1 You practice what you preach, using actions as well as words.

#2 You never give up. You have perseverance and trust in your own skills and strengths.

#3 You speak your own mind and express your own truth.

#4 You live by your own code, governed by a unique set of values, morals and views.

#5 You have the same respect for others who respect you.

I combined those definitions and came up with my own version.

Spiritual Badass:

A soul anchored in their subjective experience of a sacred dimension. One who embodies the courage to express their truth, live by their own code and actively practice their beliefs, while being respectful to self and others.

What is a sacred dimension? Dimensions are doorways into non ordinary states of consciousness.

The entry is governed by subtle energy forces. Humans are similar to musical instruments. If we want to master an instrument we have to select one that inspires our passion to play. It takes many hours of practice and a willingness to continue, despite doubts about your abilities. If you become frustrated and ditch your instrument in the corner, it will gather dust and you will not receive the joy it contains to carry you away.

At a very young age I selected the subtle energy fields as my instrument in life. Subtle energy is immensely powerful and becomes stronger the more attention you give it. When we meet people the first time for example, it is the force in subtle energy that attracts, repulses or lands you in a neutral zone while communicating.

We all carry an energetic signature with a personal vibration. If we interact with someone vibrating at a frequency imcompatible with ours, it’s like trying to join an orchestra with an untuned instrument. We feel awkward, out of place and not an accepted member of the group.

If we run into a like minded person we automatically line up with their energy and maybe even feel like we’ve known them for years. The relationship can become effortless in certain ways because we’re not constantly trying to match their frequencies. Interacting with people resonating on your plane is similar to coming home, throwing off your shoes and slipping into your comfort clothes.

The doorway into subtle realms is open and welcoming to all of us. Many are afraid to enter new territories of consciousness. They don’t know what they will uncover there. That fear is credible and I understand it. Like any fear, it loses it’s juice if you are able to engage with it. A willingness to enter new realms means you are open to non ordinary states, which are not understood using reason or logic.

Spiritual badasses know their playing field is limited to their own subjective experiences. If they want to progress in contacting their true nature they have to release their hold on how they desire the Universe to operate and what is actually possible in terms of manifestation.

There is also an aspect of divine timing in our awakening. A seed is not planted in the soil and then told to grow to our specifications. Trust is required in all growth. We trust the soil is fertile enough to support new life and the sun will shine on the emerging sprout. We must wait patiently until fruit shows on the vine and has ripened enough to harvest.

When younger, I actively pursued the divine pulse in everything and everyone I interacted with. Because my intention was so focused on inexplicable mysteries, I was often exposed to non ordinary events. This mystical inclination occured in stages and I needed to build a firm foundation to support my nervous system during the process.

There were many periods of trial and struggle at junctures in my life, along with the bestowing of profound gifts. Spiritual badasses may cry for mercy after a particularly intense phase of testing through a prolonged dark night of the soul. They are resilient however and emerge from the pits with a renewed trust in spirit.

A succinct statement of a spiritual bad asses developmental cycle was eloquently stated by Kahlil Gibran in his book, The Prophet. ‘The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain’.

Author-camping in 1979, age 28

When I was 28 and returned to the U.S. after an extended exploration of Latin America, I was primed for a deeper immersion into my own being. I spent many hours automatic hand writing late at night, as a form of journaling. I was voluntarily submitting to my subconscious mind and the impulses it contained.

One night I had an extremely intense dream of an enormous black spider weaving a black web in black space. After the spider had completed the web, it used all eight of it’s legs to gather the web into it’s abdomen and consumed it. An immediate burst of brilliant light followed this dark vision, waking me up with a pounding heart. I sat up in bed and saw silver letters glowing on the wall. I grabbed my notebook and wrote them down — Life and Teachings of the Masters of the Far East. What was this?

Two days later I was painting a window sill in an apartment on the second floor of the triplex I was living in. A new neighbor was moving in on the first floor and carrying a large box through the yard. He glanced up and smiled when he saw me in the window. Five minutes later there was a knock at the door. I opened it to find him looking shy, holding books and shuffling his feet.

He told me the strangest thing had just occurred. When he spotted me in the window, he heard a voice instructing him to loan me a series of books he owned. They were five, slim, leather bound books entitled ‘Life and Teaching of the Masters of the Far East’.

I ran to get my journal and showed him what I had written two days previous. This was a case of matching frequencies and the Universe pulling in important new information for me to integrate. The express delivery of Baird T. Spalding’s memoir of the teachings he and his team of researchers experienced during 11 years in the Far East, ignited my belief in the highly unorthodox revelations they held.

Where there is light, there is shadow. They go together. A spiritual badass never hesitates to acknowledge that fact.I wanted to exist in the full glory of light. I had drunk deeply of it’s nectar and developed an unquenchable thirst. My payment for the blessings I received was a willingness to acknowledge and deal with the deepest, darkest parts of my own and other’s being.

As I continued to not only survive, but thrive, I began unconditionally trusting Source energy to provide my next highest bar in self realization. And there’s always a next. I’m saying I became a spiritual badass and never stopped practicing.

Trust, that a benign force is supporting us, more potent and vast than our brains can comprehend, is the key to a spiritual badasses kingdom within.

We won’t like all of our lessons. A lot of us are in a state of fear about the Coronavirus entering our bodies or domain. Spiritual badasses replace fear with personal action. Respecting our bodies as the temples they are and using common sense in our personal choices helps fuel positivity and wise choices. If we become sick, we know there is a reason for that particular lesson and accept it.

World challenges will continue to arise as our population increases and viruses mutate accordingly. Humans are constantly migrating and morphing into new versions of theirselves. Growth is unstoppable.

Those of us resistant to change and the unfamiliar, will have to learn to incorporate flexibility in their consciousness. Adaptability includes awareness of the unseen realms. That which is hidden from view is informing your life more than you may want to believe. A non ordinary life is yours for the asking, but you must ask.

Intention, gratitude and appreciation play a large role in your petition. I am grateful for every moment and each new breath I take. The good, bad and ugly, moves hand in hand with the exquisite light I have been honored to receive.

I am no different than you are. We struggle and shine together. I am simply willing to acknowledge and embrace the unknown, unseen fields of influence governing our lives.

This attunement can usher in the unimaginable. The human race is waking up to our vast potential. I invite you to open your own doorway and merge with the spiritual badass you truly are.

So be it.
