Summary

The article contrasts two types of individuals: "jackhammers," who have a clear, focused passion, and "hummingbirds," who have diverse interests and may not have found a singular passion.

Abstract

The article introduces the concept of hummingbirds and jackhammers as metaphors for two distinct types of personalities in the pursuit of passion and career. Jackhammers are characterized by their unwavering focus and dedication to a specific passion, while hummingbirds are more versatile, with a broad range of interests and possibly no clear-cut passion. The author, inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert, suggests that hummingbirds may feel undervalued or lost in a society that tends to celebrate those with a singular, intense passion. This can lead hummingbirds to perceive themselves as unsuccessful, especially when their varied pursuits don't yield the expected outcomes.

Opinions

  • Society often overvalues individuals with a clear, burning passion (jackhammers) and may undervalue those with a broader spectrum of interests (hummingbirds).
  • Hummingbirds, who may be skilled in multiple areas or curious about various fields, risk feeling directionless or less successful due to societal expectations.
  • The article suggests that hummingbirds should recognize and embrace their unique nature rather than feel pressured to conform to the jackhammer ideal.
  • There is an implication that hummingbirds might benefit from redefining success on their own terms, rather than by society's narrower definitions.

Are You A Hummingbird Or A Jackhammer?

Hello to my fellow hummingbirds!

I heard this concept from Elizabeth Gilbert.

🔥 Jackhammers are people who know exactly what they want to do; they have a burning passion for something specific and they never give up on pursuing it.

🦜 Hummingbirds, on the other hand, never really nail down a specific burning passion. They are either good at many things, are interested in a variety of things, or haven’t found anything they are passionate about.

⚡ The problem is: because our society praises the passionate and driven, hummingbirds run the risk of underestimating their unique nature.

They are prone to feel directionless or unsuccessful because they have tried many things some of which might not have turned out the way they expect.

Curious. Are you a hummingbird or a jackhammer?
