Are You a Foxhole Friend?
How do you know?
Are you a “Foxhole Friend” to your friends? Who are your Foxhole Friends?
Maybe your Foxhole Friend is a sibling. Or your spouse (let’s hope). Or a childhood friend who has seen your best and your worst. And having seen your best and worst, is still there as a friend.
What is a Foxhole Friend?
Here are some possible attributes of a Foxhole Friend. The type of Foxhole Friend I hope to be to those who count on me.
- Battle Beside Each Other, Ask Why Later: There is strength in numbers. A foxhole friend stands beside you to show strength in numbers and help with firepower if necessary.
- Tell Truths, Away From the Battlefield: Or at least in private. If the battle is unnecessary, I would hope the Foxhole Friend will say something when an opponent’s eyes and ears are not near.
- Silence Can Be Golden: Sometimes, just a presence is most powerful. A Foxhole Friend is one who is present, though not always trying to fix things with words. Sometimes, just having someone by your side is what a friend really needs.
- Hold In a Strong Grip in the Heart: Like a rescue grip. If their hand fails, you still have them in hand. Forearm-to-forearm. A Foxhole Friend has this kind of grip in their heart, whether it be in compassion, prayer, or both.
Being a Foxhole Friend can be difficult.
Often, this kind of friendship is forged long before battles. Sometimes, you don’t know who a Foxhloe Friend is until a battle is before you. Or them.
