Are you a creative entrepreneur?

What is a creative entrepreneur?
- A maker
- An artist
- A writer
- A YouTuber
- An Instagrammer
- A designer
- Plus many other ways…
Hundreds of thousands of people make money, some A LOT of money using their own sense of creativity.
Give me a piece of this — I can hear you say!
Like any small business, it takes work and is often much harder for a creative person.
Creative people tend not to like the other aspects of business away from the creative side, which can make it very difficult to grow and maintain a business long-term.
What can a creative do?
Ask for, and get the help you need.
- This may be from a family member — make sure they know about being self-employed.
- Join Facebook groups that offer you free advice — there are many to choose from.
- Go along to networking events — Check out your local area.
- Create your own group of other creatives so you can all help each other with tips and ideas — Reach out to people you know or follow online.
- When you can, utilise an accountant and legal professional to help to stay on track with the admin side of your business — this will be money well spent.
Take the time to realise that to be successful, your need to give attention to the aspects of your business that are not as fun but still need attention.
- Sales
- Admin
- Marketing
- Cash flow and more
Be patient
Any business takes time to grow and become self-sustainable. It may be many years before you can say that you earn a living from your creativity alone.
Remember that while people look like an overnight success, they RARELY ever are. Often they don’t share their full story and only share the highlight reel.
Keep learning for both your craft and your business. This is essential for ANY business owner.
Know your worth
I wish I could make this EXTREMELY BOLD!!!!!
So many creatives are taken advantage of by people who expect them to work for free.
DO NOT GIVE AWAY YOUR CREATIVITY FOR FREE. This will not pay the bills, put food on your table or have a roof over your head.
DO NOT LET ANYONE TALK DOWN ON YOUR TALENTS. They may do this to get you to offer yourself or your products for free. Have the courage to say NO to working for FREE.
See what other successful creatives are doing, and don’t accept anything less. You are just as valuable as anyone else in business and deserve to make money from your creativity.
I don’t care what you do or who you do it for; you deserve to be paid. This goes for family, too; if they want to support you, they will pay full price so you can grow your business.
How are you managing as a creative business owner?
