Are We Prepared for COVID-19 Mental Health Issues?
Questions about our ability to handle the REAL pandemic

COVID-19 pandemic continues to grow around the world. We are in the next phase of this pandemic, which is the fall and winter months. This is traditionally where more people tend to get sick. The result of this increased sickness is more lockdowns.
Health authorities are working on containing this virus, but I don’t believe that it is working. The reason is that it is a virus, and it will continue to spread no matter what we do.
While lockdowns will be somewhat effective in reducing the spread of a virus, they are creating another pandemic that may be worse than the one we are currently under. This pandemic is the mental health pandemic.
If we do not gain control of this virus soon and it continues for several months or even several years, we will have a severe problem as we are not capable as human beings to remain locked up in our homes. Our health authorities are not taking into consideration the human condition.
Lockdown Fallout
We’ve already seen some of the results of lockdowns. This includes people getting hostile over the lockdown and engaging in activities they might not normally take part in, such as rioting or marches. They are protesting the constant need for masks, social distancing, and other measures that are taking place to try to contain the virus. The fallout from these lockdowns is the fact that people’s sanity is starting to fray.
We cannot keep people inside for extended periods or expect them to wear masks everywhere they go. While this is acceptable for a certain duration, if it continues, we are going to see more protests and more people lashing out. It might be time for us to accept this virus and to move on with our lives.
No matter what we do, people will still get sick. We may not contain the virus for many years.
Vaccines may not be effective as viruses can change quite rapidly. Do we intend to lock ourselves indoors indefinitely? If this is the case, we are going to have severe mental health issues.
My Experiences
I’ve been following the rules outlined by my health authorities here in Canada. I do not like these measures one bit. I feel that the infringe upon my rights as a citizen. Nevertheless, I have been wearing my mask, social distancing, using hand sanitizer, and so on. Despite this fact, I can feel that my mental health is, in fact, coming under strain.
I look more often at the booze cart in the corner of my living room. The bottles on that cart are a lot lower than they used to be.
I’ve been drinking more often than I should because I’m stuck at home and can’t go anywhere. When I want to go somewhere, I have to mask up.I used to go out on Friday nights to enjoy live music. I have not seen a lot of music since this pandemic went into full swing at the beginning of this year. For me, listening to live music is a part of who I am.
I am a musician, and I love listening to music live. I have not been able to go to any concert or see a band in a pub. It is not the same as listening to it online. Not being able to hear live music has impacted my mental health.
While my local pub has opened, it now closes at 10 with no alcohol served after that time. There is no dancing, no live music, and no fun. We go there, eat, have a couple of drinks and go home. That is about the extent of our social life. I don’t go out all that often. I buy most of my things online. I go into the store wearing my mask only when necessary. I absolutely hate wearing one, and they make me feel uncomfortable when I wear it.
Tragedy and Not Able to Grieve
My aunt turned 90 at the beginning part of this year. Normally, we would have gone down to see her in residence and had a party. We could not do this because COVID-19 had locked down the building. Unfortunately, in the summer, my aunt passed away. She did not die from COVID -19. She died from cancer.
We missed that opportunity to spend time with her. If we were able to have a normal funeral, she probably would have had 300 people there. Since we are in the midst of a pandemic, we only had a few close family members, and we had to mask up inside the church. Many others have gone through the exact same situation. Situations in our life which have meaning or significance, have been taken away from us.
Many Mental Health Issues
People have not been able to live their normal lives. They have not been able to get married. Those that are suffering from health conditions can’t have visitors because covid-19 might spread in the hospital. Others have not been able to attend birthday parties, go out to dinner, have a drink in the pub, and so on. While some of this has come back, especially during the summer months, it is now going to be taken away from us as we go into another phase of the pandemic.
These cumulative lockdowns will have an impact on people’s mental health.
Quite a few have lost jobs. They’re not able to provide for their families, and so on. We’ve already seen as suicide rates go up and other problems with mental health. We cannot expect people to stay inside indefinitely. We must go back to living our normal lives as soon as possible, for the deaths from this pandemic may pale in comparison to the mental health issues that will we will be left with.
We are social creatures that need social interaction. While some people might be fine staying at home all the time, most are not. We have no festivals, no events, no music, and not much of anything to look forward to in the coming months. If this pandemic continues, the new year, then any scheduled events for 2021, will be canceled.
The Next Pandemic
The problem I see is that mental health will be our next pandemic.
We cannot expect people to mask up everywhere they go for an extended duration. If we do not get back to living our regular lives, then our mental health will suffer. It is not a natural thing for people to drastically change their lives because there is a virus out there. I hope the health authorities are gearing up for this new pandemic because it might be worse than what we are currently suffering from.
