Are We Living In A Failed World?

An Invitation To Reflection

Photo by Artem Maltsev on Unsplash

We live in a world where everyone thinks they do the right thing, so they are entitled to do the wrong thing. So ends can justify the means.

Alex Gibney

The sun rises. The air is smoggy. The ground trembles under the hurried commuter’s steps. Everything on muted mode.

Gazing out my window, I find myself sending questions into this void of silence:

Are we living in a failed world?

A look around — the evidence is overwhelming: the headlines scream of wars, famine, and ecological collapse. Politicians dancing their macabre waltzs.

And what of us, the people?

We chase after elusive happiness, only to find it slipping through our fingers like grains of sand.

We swipe left and right, seeking love in pixelated profiles. Devoided of depth, conversations are reduced to emojis and acronyms. Families taking dinner, their eyes glued to screens, disconnected even in proximity.

A warm hug or a comforting hand on the shoulder?

We’ve traded them for virtual likes and retweets.

Our hearts yearn for genuine connection, yet we settle for superficial interactions. We’ve forgotten how to listen — to truly hear the pain in someone’s voice or the joy in their laughter. Instead, we shout into our screen and keyboard, hoping for validation.

Morality? What’s that?

Not hurting other people means I’m moral? Is “I do what’s good” equivalent to “I do what’s right”?

What about compassion?

The homeless cardboard signs barely tap our peripheral vision. The cries of the oppressed are just ignored or dismissed as inconvenient noise.

Our moral compass spins wildly, pointing nowhere.

We’ve become voyeurs in our own tragedy, watching the world burn from the safety of our screens.

Trust is eroded

Science — questioned, facts — dismissed as mere opinions. Friends — become foes, enemies — masquerade as allies. Communities — members with hidden agendas.

Tiptoeing through a minefield of half-truths, wondering if anyone is truly sincere.

Should we despair?

Is this our legacy? A world of greed, apathy, and disregard for the well-being of others?

What if it is not the world that has failed us, but we who have failed the world?

The answer is within us — the choices we make, the kindness we withhold, the love we offer.

Seek the quiet moments and listen. Listen more. And then, reach out. Connect. Love. Act. In these small gestures lies the redemption of our failed world.

So, I ask again: are we living in a failed world?

Perhaps. But as I say every time I write about the hardship we face, it is not too late to rewrite the narrative. The answer lies within us.

Note: This story is a work of reflection. It’s meant to evoke emotions and provoke thought. My dear reader: the world is multifaceted, and while it has its bads and wrongs and uglies, it also holds immense positivity, beauty and potential. 🌎❤️
