Are We Indulging With the Climate Change Problem?
Recently I had a chance to attain a webinar “Frozen or Molten Earth” organized by Nanoland Group, India on the August 7, 2021. The entire conversations were basically to advocate the extreme danger of the climate change and the effort that scientists and community mobilizers are working in Asia. There were excellent presenters advocated their progress as well as cited the problems.
However, to me, it sounds like as a scientist we are still indulged in the problem because we must fulfill our need for food and family wellbeing. We do not have time to see the crux of the problem just keep working and keep finding out what next?
The Kyoto Protocol was hardly coming to the world adoption only on end of 1997. With the constant amendments and ratification process, it came into action only in 2005. Currently, there are 192 Parties to the Kyoto Protocol. Same time, the Kyoto Protocol on climate change also came into effect. Several countries pledged to reduce the carbon on the Earth Atmosphere.
After almost 25 years, we are still crying out loud to “reduce the carbon emission as the temperature is rising extremely, and the future is totally grim”. The younger generation will have no option to see the damaged earth and merge into it ultimately.
Why is this happening? I often wonder and ask to my fellow friends and professors in the USA. The responses are varied. The most authentic and believable answers are two: Rule no. 1. The perception of we the human must be superior? Rule no. 2. While maintaining superiority, you can do anything. This tendency may be good for someone if increasing personal up bringing.
However, if someone is destroying the earth ecosystem, then they do not care for anything what is happening and what is going to happen soon. Their disciples are already planning to build another space for them, and they will govern the earth from there. They may not need the human labor because technology is helping them to build human like robot to work 24 / 7 and these artificial humans never complain any racial, economic disparity. Problem solved.
In Minnesota, I am a passive climate activist and observed several discussions and webinars. Contributed my ideas and thoughts on the native Asian perspectives how and where we can make change. However, most of the time, I feel the activists are hog washing the climate agenda because they must sustain their family and live happily. We advocated strongly to stop the fossil fuel pipeline that passing along the Mississippi River.
The pipeline is contributing to the air pollution, increasing atmospheric temperature, destroying river ecology, destroying native heritage, degrading native culture and wellbeing. The oppositions to the pipeline are from everywhere politicians are opposing, faith communities are opposing, social groups and environmental advocates are opposing. Still, the pipeline is being constructed and moving along. Why?
While living in this State, the two extreme climate events are already experienced. Couple years ago, there was a polar vortex and people died freezing while not knowing the severity of the problem. These days we get intermittently the heat warning not to go outside. The two-temperature extreme is nowadays annual recurrence in the US Midwest. The aftermath of these extreme is huge that must be taken care of if we are sincere enough.
The recent report from NASA quote Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) “Taken as a whole, the range of published evidence indicates that the net damage costs of climate change are likely to be significant and to increase over time.” NASA further predicts on climate effects:
1. Change will continue to this century and beyond; 2. Temperatures will continue to rise; 3. Frost-free Season (and Growing Season) will lengthen, affecting ecosystem and agriculture; 4. Increasing precipitation trend keep continue; 5. More drought and heat wave keep continue; 6. Hurricane will become stronger and more intense; 7. Sea level will rise 1–8 feet by 2100; 8. Artic likely to become ice free”.
My question to the climate scientists, this time are we again keep working another 25 years and letting the whole earth melt? or are we willing to change the ongoing indulgence pattern? I think this is the question that future generation should ask to their parents and grandparents.
