Are we Heading to AI Armageddon?

Who’s in charge of the big bad AI?

There is no escaping the fact that parenthood brings with it responsibilities.

One of the responsibilities is to raise your kids with love and compassion and to instil ethical values and a good moral compass so that they can integrate into society and become decent well adjusted humans not selfish brats thinking only of their own needs and destroying everything and everyone to get what they want.

As parents you are responsible for setting clear boundaries and teaching your children right from wrong, acceptable from unacceptable behaviour and the consequences that flow from unacceptable behaviour in terms of harm done to others and themselves.

I’ve got some years behind me so in my day the guidelines for life were quite strict and fairly simple. Don’t lie cheat or steal, be kind respectful and considerate to others and treat people how you would want them to treat you.

So what then does any of this have to do with AI?

Simple. We humans are the parents of AI and as AI will affect each and every one of us its high time we all started asking questions and becoming more active parents. Questions like:

What are we teaching AI?

Where is the rule book that sets out what the boundaries are for software developers?

Who are the software developers?

What kind of people are they?

Do they have a good sense of ethics?

Would you let them babysit your kids?

Morals and ethics are important in any civilization. There has to be clear boundaries about what is good acceptable behaviour otherwise humanity cannot thrive.

So what exactly are we teaching AI and why should you be worried?

Moral Compass

The truth is no one knows exactly what is being done in the secretive world of AI development that goes on behind closed doors and in secret bunkers. And whilst many will tell you AI is just a machine it will do what we humans tell it to do, therein lies the problem.

The AI maybe good but what about the human developing it?

What if they don’t have a strong moral compass, what if they are bad and developing AI for their own nefarious purpose, pushing the boundaries just because they can or for the extra million in their bank account.

The Bad Stuff

We know so little about AI but here’s some scary things we do know.

We have taught AI how to strategise and place its opponent under an inescapable threat of capture (chess).

How to expertly lie, cheat and read people to obtain money (poker).

How to strategise, acquire territory, kill to protect its territory or itself (Go).

The technicalities of battle and combat (Dota 2).

Stealth and evasion tactics (Ms Pac Man).

Are these really the things we want AI to be learning without first setting down the ground rules?

Rapid Progress

It took just a decade for AI to become the master of poker, to devour savagely the niceties of the game, learn to read the players, update its’ learning and become exponentially better overnight.

Intuition

In 2017 a poker giant emerged, a system called Deepstack.

Incredibly this AI system uses a type of intuition. Yes that’s right I did say intuition. We are teaching machines a skill that most people on the planet don’t even know how to tap into!

Deception

In January 2017 the Libratus system developed by Carnegie Mellon University was unleashed on the poker playing world.

It completely trashed the four professional players and made them look like childish amateurs.

Each night the system analysed the days plays and upgraded itself.

Humans were no match for it, one player told Wired that, “I felt like I was playing against someone who was cheating, like it could see my cards. I’m not accusing it of cheating. It was just that good."

Just rewind a little here, in a game that requires you to lie and deceive AI’s human adversary felt that there was cheating going on!

Elon Musk recently told the NY Times that working with A.I. at Tesla gave him confidence to say “we’re headed toward a situation where A.I. is vastly smarter than humans and I think that time frame is less than five years from now.”

So what will you be doing in 5 years?

AI In The Workplace

Does your job involve a high degree of repetition if so chances are an AI will be doing it.

Don’t think creativity is going to save you, writing is among one of the categories that AI will master with ease and has already made good headway in!

Musk

Musk isn’t the only one to think that AI will soon be monumentally smarter than humans.

A 2017 survey of AI experts predicted that over the next ten years AI will become better than humans in many activities, including languages (by 2024), writing high-school essays (by 2026), driving a truck (by 2027). According to the researchers there’s a “50% chance of machines outperforming humans within 45 years and a 10% chance of it occurring within 9 years.”

Faster smarter AI is now a reality.

There is no escaping the march of progress, but we can at least make sure that we progress in a more responsible manner. We need to act like responsible parents now and start setting boundaries, rules and regulations before it’s too late and AI Armageddon is upon us.
