Fermi Paradox
Are We Alone in the Universe?
Finding Alien worlds
Many scientists, thinkers and those who dream took up this challenge to venture into space seeking answers for one of the biggest existential questions of all times. The expansion of our knowledge on the universe is slowly and steadily making its enormous scales known.
With billions of galaxies that are host to numerous stars and planets, it becomes conceivable if not inevitable that there may be life elsewhere within the cosmos.
The possibility that we might not be alone in the universe has been fueled by discoveries of exoplanets- worlds revolving around distant stars.
Searching for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is a program aimed at finding and understanding potential advanced civilization signals outside of Earth.
It’s anticipated that by searching through artificial radio waves or techno-signatures anywhere in space, they may stumble upon some evidence that we have companionship outside Earth.
Drake Equation has been formulated by scientists to gauge the possibility of intelligent life elsewhere in the Universe quantitatively. The formula of probability incorporates variables like rate of star birth, fraction of stars with planets and likelihood that these planets harbor life.
The equation does not give an absolute answer but suggests infinitesimally our being alone in the Universe.
However, despite the vast potential for life elsewhere in the cosmos, we have yet to come across any concrete evidence for extraterrestrial civilizations. For many years, perplexing Fermi Paradox remains unresolved.
Some theories explain this — from rare occurrence of intelligence to presence of technological barriers that hinder interstellar communication or travel.
It would be a transformative event for mankind if any kind of extraterrestrial life was discovered beyond Earth-whether it be microbial or intelligent. It would turn our understanding about the Universe upside down and challenge our position within it.
If such discovery is made, it will become a point where all aspects including science and technology, philosophy and religion will never remain the same again changing their perspective forever.
But still search continues regardless with extra solar planet exploration showing no signs of abating.
