Are multivitamin gummies, as compared to tablets, that effective?
They are manufactured to make it palatable to supplement our health
I was in Chicago recently, and struggled to buy normal multivitamin tablets simply because most were in gummies. I do not like gummies, so I kept searching. I was surprised that even the adults ones are also in gummies. Since their inception, I have never tried vitamin gummies, or their royal jelly counters because they look like children's sweets to me.
Vitamins and minerals are called micronutrients because they are needed in a very small amount for the body to function properly.
Multivitamin gummies are both multivitamins and minerals combined in a jelly-like supplement. They contain gelatin and sugar, sweeteners, favouring and colourings, which makes them desirable to take. The idea was first invented to be more palatable to encourage children to take the pills, but now we have adult pills in gummies.
‘’The global nutritional supplements market size was estimated at USD 381.47 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.3% from 2023 to 2030. Growing attention to health has significantly helped the market thrive.‘’
There is virtually no health sector where you will not see a corresponding vitamin and mineral supplement: hair, skin, reproductive health, anti-ageing, anti-wrinkle, etc. The question is, do they work?
Do we need dietary supplements, and if so, who?
Nutritional experts insinuate that when you eat healthily, on a varied and balanced plate, there is no need for dietary supplements, so they are a waste of money per se. The argument here for me is that most of our foods have been denatured, overprocessed, and contain high levels of saturated fats, salt, and sugar, which necessitate taking multivitamins.
So I do take multivitamin supplements.
However, in temperate regions where there is hardly any sun, vitamin D is highly recommended for those over 65, and for those who cover their bodies for religious reasons, (the Muslim hijab, Catholic nuns, etc.). The best way to get vitamin D is through sunlight.
Black people living in temperate regions, people who are house-bound, pregnant, and breast-feeding women need about 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day.
Vegans may need some vitamins and minerals because of their diet. They will need B12, calcium, iodine, omega-3, iron, and zinc supplements.
Certain people with the health condition of not being able to absorb certain minerals and vitamins in food can top up with supplements.
Those trying to conceive will benefit from folic acid, C & D vitamins.
For all others, it is better to see a registered dietician, for various tests to determine what you actually need.
Are gummies better or worse than tablets?
Now back to the topic of the article, are gummies better or worse than tablets. According to UK, manufacturing practice (GMP), gummies and tablets are classified under FOOD, and there is a minimum standard expected in both gummies and tabets.
Gummies, as I mentioned earlier, may contain gelatim, sugar colourings and flavourings that make them not suitable for everyone, especially those with certain allergy reactions.
What do vitamins and minerals do in the body?
Vitamins and minerals are vital in DNA synthesis, help release energy from foods, and act as antioxidants, protecting our cells from damage by free radicals.
Calcium and iron are crucial in the formation of bones and teeth, as well as the normal function of the central nervous system.
Intravenenous Vitamins & Drips
Injecting vitamins and minerals into the bloodstream (veins) is popular with celebrities. However, the long-term effects have not been studied. Again, injecting directly into the blood stream has the risk of passing along air bubbles.
The best route for vitamins and minerals is dietary via food, first and foremost.
Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)
This is a measure of the minimum daily intake of minerals and vitamins that the body needs to function efficiently.
RDA is not the same for both men, children, and women, as the amount needed varies with age and sex.
The Downside Of Taking Multivitamin
This should not apply to everyone, but dieticians believe people generally substitute multivitamins for healthy eating, believing that taking multivitamins will compensate for what they miss in foods.
Vitamins and minerals are classified into WATER-soluble; they are not stored, and excesses easily pass out from the body, (urinary), sweat, spit, etc. It also means these need to be replaced regularly if needed. Examples include most B & C vitamins.
Then fat-soluble ones are usually stored in fat cells and in the liver, e.g., in D and E.
Apart from some vitamins that are water-soluble and any excess will pass out in urine, there can be toxicity from taking too much of some particular vitamin or mineral supplements.
The Takeaways
- Those people who substitute vitamins and minerals for healthy eating will probably develop health issues later in life.
- Mutivitamin gummies are easily available in supermarkets, pharmacies, and online.
- Fizzy and effervescence tablets contain more salt, so take note of that.
