Are Italian Men The Best Lovers? 6 Things You Must Know Before Dating One
Some time ago I used to teach evening classes in a language school, and one of my students was a very nice Italian man. Before every lesson, he used to make nice comments on my clothes. Short sentences, as if he just wanted to mention it, without sounding too invasive.
He was always asking me about my weekends, just to find out if I was single or not (I was), and in his brilliant conversation he gave hints about movies and books, and about the new restaurants that were opening in the area. His manners were so delicate and kind, that I couldn’t avoid thinking of him, and taking care of my looks every time I went to his class. I was falling into his net.
Then he started leaving me little cards under the windscreen wiper of my car; they were handwritten notes like “Hey, I just wanted to surprise you”, “Hello, you look great today”. I still have some of them. One day he left a red rose, with a long stem, which means a lot of love (and a lot of money, since they are more expensive). Whenever we met at school, he only had eyes for me. I was daydreaming. I can still recall the great emotion of feeling attractive for a special man. Even Dante Alighieri, the greatest Italian poet, wrote about this feeling:
“Amor, ch’a nullo amato amar perdona”
It means that if someone loves you, you will reciprocate his love.
Ah, those romantic days… and how sweet it was when a student of mine told me she was falling in love with him, since he was flirting with her. After all, he was just trying to make two girls happy at the same time, a typical generous Italian!
Why have Italian men become so famous for their relationship with women? Why are they so attractive? Most of their characteristics are just cliché, but I have first-hand experienced some of them. Here is my list of their main points, I must admit I talked about it with my girlfriends before writing in case I missed some important details.
1.They love the process of courtship.
Do you remember the old fairy tale of a princess in a tower, waiting for her knight, who reaches her and saves her after killing the dragon? That is exactly the play we are all involved. It’s a game we enjoy. Italian men find a woman they like, and they need to conquer her tower. They don’t give up easily because that’s what a knight would do! They will do anything to get your attention; your lack of interest makes you and your tower more interesting. They want to win the game. And if it’s not you, fine, they ‘ll soon find another woman with another tower.
They give you a lot of compliments. And they talk about love and about feelings. They will call you and text you quite often. At first their full attention might be too much, but then you will forget that it’s a game, and, like a naïve young girl you will fall in love with them.
My ex-boyfriend had this cliché sentence, which stole my heart during our first dinner: “I can’t look at you otherwise I will not resist kissing you”. After we broke up, he confessed he used to say the same sentence to every woman he invited for dinner. He said it worked 100% of the times.
Italian men also give compliments in the street; when you walk, it is normal to get whistles from boys. The first time I went to London I thought I had lost all my attractiveness because boys were not calling me “Ciao, bella” in the street. I was twelve years old.
2.They are romantic and social.
They love romance and they are passionate. They will surprise you with expensive candlelit dinner at a nice restaurant. When they take you out, they will surely meet someone to talk to and tell them a long story; they will speak to everybody in the street, answer the phone, send a message, laugh with a friend. But when they plan to conquer a woman, you are their only focus. At least for that evening, or just during the dinner.
3.They are not afraid of speaking to a woman.
The main point about Italian men is that they know how to start and continue a conversation with a woman. They are not afraid or embarrassed, they can talk about really anything, they approach you with the simplest excuse, mainly about how beautiful you are, and they take it as an opportunity to go on. The subjects can range from funny to serious stuff. It is another game they play.
4. They listen to you.
Or they pretend to, especially at the beginning. In some moments you even fell like you were talking to a girlfriend: they are sensitive, emotional, caring. It doesn’t last, I am sorry I must mention the game again…
5.They are fun and not boring.
They will make you laugh or smile, they are fun and easy-going. They talk in a loud voice (I mean, I do it, too). Their voice shows their passionate nature and their capability to express emotions. They sound strong and powerful.
6. They pay for dinner.
They are generous and used to chivalry. They truly treat women like queens. They will pay for you basically all the time; don’t try to negotiate splitting the bill because they will not accept it. They take you for dinner, then to visit museums, then to the seaside on their Vespa or Fiat 500.
Italian men are lucky because they live in a country rich of culture, wonderful places, with good food and wine, so they don’t have to make a big effort.
A few months after the beginning of your relationship, even an elegant and attractive Italian man asks if you would like to cook his mother’s recipe of lasagna for him, to celebrate an important football match on tv. At first you feel honored by the request, and think it is a sign that you are a member of his family, which means his world. So, you cook, serve him his dinner and wine, keep silent not to disturb the match. You clear the table, do the dishes.
Does it sound familiar?
My opinion, based on a long experience, is that Italian men are awesome, but I am afraid that after a few months, they will become similar to every other man you’ll meet in your life. They know how to seduce a woman and they are the best lovers, but they are not always loyal or available to commit. And you will never become the most important woman of an Italian man’s life, because his mother comes first.
