Are Hashtags Dead?

Are hashtags becoming a thing of the past?
There was a time when practically every post on social media included at least two or three of the suckers.
Now, they’re an endangered species.
But in spite of what most gurus will tell you, I think they still have a place.
Especially on X/Twitter, anyway.
If you want to discover and be discovered on Twitter, you should make frequent, effective use of hashtags.
Seriously.
They’re an amazingly simple way of signposting users towards your content.
For instance, as a writer, I can use hashtags to highlight my posts and find those belonging to fellow authors.
Hashtags like #writingcommunity, #amwriting and #writersoftwitter are super useful for finding others and the content they’ve created.
They’re usually the posts the algorithm suppresses, too.
And once I find an applicable post, I can engage, share and network with its creator.
Hashtags are still a gateway to community on social media. LinkedIn seems to be phasing them out, but they’re still everywhere on X/Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.
Identify 3–4 hashtags for your niche and add them to some of your posts from now on to boost your visibility.
Want to find the perfect hashtags? Just search keywords (eg. ‘writing’) and browse the posts and profiles on the results page.
As with everything, experimentation is the best way forward.
Play around with hashtags as visibility boosters and search enablers. They’re still very much alive.
