People need to decide who will get their vote.

There have been reports in the news that more Black voters than ever will be voting for Trump in the Republican primary election when it happens. Although Trump has come out with racist comments from time to time, his opponent Nikki Haley has said that the United States is not a racist country and never has been even though she admits to experiencing some racism herself as a person of Indian heritage.

Although there are undoubtedly more non-racist people than outright racists in the United States, racism continues to be a problem as it has been for generations.

Black and Brown people along with those of Asian backgrounds have experienced and do experience racism all too often. It has become a fact of life for many of them.

As a person of Asian heritage, I have experienced racism from childhood up to the present time as a senior citizen. After Trump and some other government leaders at the time of the COVID pandemic blamed and condemned China, Americans of Asian descent were regularly the targets of racist rants and outright actions of racism.

Older people who were ethnic Asians were being thrown to the ground by strangers. Some innocent people were injured as they went about their daily business of walking or shopping.

It got so bad that people became alarmed and had protests with signs to “Stop Asian Hate.”

The fact that Black people who have experienced racism throughout their lifetimes would support a person who appears to be racist may be puzzling. It could be that they will accept that behavior by a person because they think he has other redeeming qualities. Perhaps they think he cares about them and their welfare. They may not consider the candidate to be racist or it does not matter to them. They must have their reasons.

People have their individual reasons for voting the way they do. They are free to vote as they choose. It’s a secret ballot. People do not need to tell others how they voted, but some choose to make it public.
