Are All Online Writers Doomed to Fall Short of ChatGPT?

Artificial intelligence is taking jobs

Unless you’ve been living under a ton of rocks, you’ve likely read an article or watched a video about ChatGPT. It’s artificial intelligence that can write, create art, sing, dance and cook.

OK, so that’s a lie. It can’t sing, dance and cook— yet.

But as a writer who earns income in many ways from his craft, the idea of ChatGPT scares me a bit. Just a bit. A robot can’t come close to my writing voice and style…

OK, so maybe that’s a lie too.

I’m more scared than just a bit. But not because I think ChatGPT is destined to take the role of every writer, artist and creator. Mainly because I think it just got harder to be an online content creator.

It was already difficult to compete with other freelancers. A lot of people want to make money from home via freelancing, it’s a popular gig. But now we have to compete with ROBOTS!?

Just like everyone else, I’ve played with ChatGPT just a bit. And in all honesty, it’s pretty good…at stealing other peoples’ content and filling gaps. It’s not too original and doesn’t have a great writing voice.

I even own a blog and have used Jasper (an AI writing tool) and never really liked it. I always found myself tweaking several paragraphs in the articles. Just wasn’t the best at putting together fluid sentences.

Yet.

I’m sure within the coming years, AI writing will come a long way. Mainly because of all the attention it’s getting right now. It’ll attract more people and innovation will pursue.

Is it time to give up?

While giving up isn’t quite the right option, writers do need to make changes to compete.

For starters, developing a voice and increasing your writing abilities is a major key. Thankfully, both of those tasks can be achieved by doing one thing consistently: Writing (surprise, surprise).

Write more, start a newsletter and put your own touch on your work. I can almost guarantee the end product will be better articles and stories than any AI can produce.

Or maybe it won’t be and we’ll all be battling with our AI robots for the top spots on Google. Seems like a toss-up at this point

Just kidding!…sort of.
