April Showers: Sleeping at Last

The Inspiring Music of Ryan O’Neal In recognition of National Poetry Month

In April 2020, I shared my first post of personal poems in recognition of National Poetry Month. This year, I am expanding beyond my poems to the beautiful and inspiring words that lift us and, hopefully, through these posts, lift us to our higher selves with purpose.

I offer this homage to Sleeping at Last because his music has given me so much life. His music expresses my core outlook on love and life in a way I never could without the complete companionship of his lyrics, music and voice. Sleeping at Last produces songs with the care of a doula steeped in the craft of natural birthing.

I discovered the music of Ryan O’Neal, the artist known as Sleeping at Last, mid-year 2015. I was in a coffee shop and a song with no vocals was playing as I waited for my cup of over-priced, bougeiouse coffee — a favorite past time. Something in the music caught my attention, so I immediately grabbed my phone and asked Google Assistant ‘what song is playing.’

The song was ‘Neptune’ by Sleeping at Last. It was haunting, ethereal and undeniably beautiful.

Neptune by Sleeping at Last (excerpt)

Stitch by stitch I tear apart If brokenness is a form of art I must be a poster child prodigy

Thread by thread I come apart If brokenness is a work of art Surely this must be my masterpiece

After hearing this song, I dove deep into research and discovered a voluminous catalogue. I thought, “Why on earth have I never heard of him?”

Do you recall the atmospheric music from the all of the big moments in the Twilight movie trilogy? That was him. Or, a few of the tear-jerking scenes from Emmy-award winning Grey’s Anatomy. That was him. How about the music in this budweiser superbowl commercial? That was him. And, innumerable movie and commerical scores. But, that really isn’t his claim to fame.

His claim to fame is that he has no claim to fame.

Unbeknowst to many, Sleeping at Last is one of the most profilic and talented songwriters of the past two decades. His albums have been named and themed around natural elements, astrology, numerology, phrenology, and emotions. His music is layered, dense, smart and meaningful. Songs for every significant moment and season in life are evident and soul-catching.

Enjoy these songs and lyrics!

For those in love….

For new parents….

For those experiencing loss….

Finally, I spent most of time experiencing Sleeping at Last on many mountaintops over the past few years, especially after some major life transitions. His song “Intermission” really struck a chord with me — expressing the essence of transition; remorseful and hopeful all at once.

Intermission

I’m so tired, but I can’t sleep My mind is full, but I can’t speak Among the dust of the hard-to-reach I’m stuck Right here, somewhere between Side A & side B

I could call it compromise Or just an intermission Some kind of consolation prize For the race I never finished

I want to turn these tired gears I want to feel the follow-through Some kind of equilibrium Something to set my watch to

I’m here, somewhere between Victory & a white flag Caught in this purgatory dream

I’m stuck Want to set the record straight I want to retrace my every step If I could just rewind all the tapes Then maybe I’d find my loose thread

Call it a compromise Or just an intermission Some kind of consolation prize So close but never finished

I want to turn these tired gears I want to feel the follow-through Some kind of equilibrium Something to set my watch to.
