Appreciating Fall For the Very First Time

No longer being in school has helped me appreciate the change in season from Summer to Fall.

This is the first year I feel like I am actually noticing Fall and taking advantage of the crisp weather, the smell of leaves, and the warming foods.

When I finished my undergraduate degree I was so entranced with finding a job and navigating life post-university that I didn’t notice the change to Autumn until the leaves had fallen and we were nearing our first snow.

Now that I’ve finished school yet again and am settled in my career, I’m wonderstruck by this time of year — and it's only September.

I find myself wanting to be outside breathing in the chilly fragrant air. I want to actually catch when the leaves change. And I want to eat all things pumpkin spice.

Yesterday I felt like Rory Gilmore in Stars Hollow. I was walking through parks, trails, and neighbourhoods with my head in a book, all toasty in an oversized knit sweater. Every few minutes I would giggle to myself because the moment felt so perfect. Top it off with a slight rainfall and rushing home to have soup for dinner, I was feeling the Fall fantasy.

Our morning today began with me excitedly making pumpkin spice pancakes in the shape of pumpkins and zombie's heads and sprucing up our apartment with an “Autumn Clean”.

Today I took a different route for my walk and ended up at my nearby park where I started a cozy mystery while chatting with the geese. Now I sit at home with a cat on my lap about to dive even further into this small town whodunit.

I never knew I could be so excited about a season of the year. I used to say that Summer was my favourite since that is when I celebrate my birthday. I’ve realized though that as I grow into my cozy girl (or “grandma chic” as I like to say) era, Fall is the time of year that I thrive. With big sweaters and murder mysteries, foods that warm your soul, and hot drinks that heat your chilled fingers — I can’t wait for what this season will bring and I’m so grateful I can finally fully experience it!
