Summary

Senior UX/Product Designer Kate emphasizes the necessity for designers to acquire expertise in 3D game tools, software, and programming to adapt to the evolving demands of Apple Vision Pro's design roles.

Abstract

Kate, a Senior UX/Product Designer with a decade of experience, discusses the shifting landscape for designers in the context of Apple's job postings for the Apple Vision Pro. She highlights that the new roles require designers to have a background in narrative-driven interactive entertainment, proficiency in real-time 3D game editors like Unity or Unreal, and expertise in 3D modeling software such as 3D Studio Max or Maya. Additionally, knowledge of programming languages such as Javascript or C# for scripting is essential. Kate points out that while traditional UX/Product design skills are valuable, the future of design in cutting-edge technologies like the Apple Vision Pro demands a broader skill set that includes spatial computing. She encourages designers to embrace this change and invest time in learning these new tools, citing her own experience of mastering them within 3-6 months. Kate suggests utilizing free online resources and platforms like YouTube and TikTok for learning, and she shares her own augmented design work as an example of what can be achieved with these skills.

Opinions

  • Kate believes that UX/UI and Product Designers must evolve by gaining experience with 3D game tools and software to stay relevant in the industry, especially for roles involving innovative technologies like the Apple Vision Pro.
  • She suggests that while some designers may already be familiar with UI scripting languages like Javascript or C#, there is a significant gap in the familiarity with 3D UI integration, 3D game editors, and spatial computing among regular UX/Product designers.
  • Kate is optimistic about the learning curve, stating that with dedication, designers can acquire the necessary gaming tools and XR design skills within a few months.
  • She advocates for the use of free online resources as a cost-effective way to learn these new skills before committing to more expensive educational programs.
  • Kate's personal experience serves as a testament to the feasibility and importance of expanding one's design skill set to include emerging technologies and methodologies.

  • spatial computing

Some designers have experience with the following:

  • Javascript, C#, or similar for UI scripting

We must learn Game Tools if designers want to work on R&D for cutting-edge technologies like Apple Vision Pro.

The good thing is we can learn these gaming tools in 3–6 months. How do I know? I did it.

It starts with XR design skill stacking.

Last year, I started learning 3D gaming tools and XR experiences for the Metaverse and 3D virtual experiences for virtual construction sites. Learning these tools can take time to get up to speed, but it’s worth investing time in learning them as we use more augmented reality experiences on mobile and VR headsets.

Where should you start?

There are lots of free resources online. I recommend taking free courses before diving into a bootcamp or expensive class if you’re already a seasoned UX / Product Designer. You can find everything on YouTube and TikTok.
