Apple Sues Former Employee Andrew Aude for Leakage of Sensitive Information

Apple sued its former employee Andrew Aude in a California state court this month, accusing him of leaking sensitive information to media and other technology company employees, violating confidentiality agreements and labor laws.

Andrew Aude’s Apple Indictment

Apple is asking for a jury trial and seeking more than $25,000 in damages.

Andrew Aude joined Apple after graduating from the college in 2016 as an iOS software engineer. He is primarily responsible for optimizing battery performance and, as a result, has access to information on dozens of Apple’s most sensitive projects.

According to the indictment, over five years, Aude used Apple-issued iPhones for work to leak information about more than six Apple products and policies, including the then-unannounced Journal app, Vision Pro headset, product development policies, compliance policies, headcount, and more.

Apple’s Misdisclosure of Aude’s Leak

For example, in April 2023, Aude leaked the final list of features of the iPhone Journal app to a reporter at The Wall Street Journal over the phone. In the same month, the newspaper published a report titled “Apple Plans to Launch iPhone Diary App in Expanded Health Program.”

Aude has sent over 1,400 messages to a journalist he calls “Homeboy” through the encrypted messaging app Signal. And more than 10,000 text messages to another female reporter on The Information and even made a private trip to meet with her.

How did the leaked information impact Apple’s business and reputation?

According to Apple, Aude’s actions are “broad and purposeful.” Allegedly, Aude admitted that the leak was supposed to “stifle” products and features he did not endorse. Apple said the misdisclosures led to at least five news stories discussing internal confidential and proprietary information, impacting Apple’s ability to surprise users.

Apple learned of Aude’s leak at the end of 2023 and fired him in December of that year for this reason.

Of course, for a recent college graduate to join Apple as an employee, we should learn confidential information in advance. But I cannot deny that it diminishes the element of surprise. In recent years, Apple’s press conference received many criticisms for not having new ideas.

The impressive “Dynamic Island” from the previous year has received mixed reviews, and the stunning appearance at the time of release is still fresh in people’s minds. Perhaps this is the meaning of secrecy until the last moment. As a user, I hope Apple can let us regain that surprise and excitement.
