Anyone Can Lose Weight
And It’s Ridiculously Easy!
Anyone can lose weight. The problem is that many people just don’t know how to. Many people try to starve themselves to lose weight, but all that does is make you insanely hungry. Just as many people try to burn it off with intense exercise, but that just makes your body conserve energy (and calories) throughout the rest of the day (and it makes you insanely hungry). But there’s a way to lose all of that excess weight without going hungry or running a marathon, and I’ll share the basics with you here.
Before I continue, let me say that this article is not for those who are looking to lose five or ten pounds to have six-pack abs or whatever. I’m talking to those who have gained significant weight (20+ pounds) and can’t seem to lose it. I myself lost 55 pounds in six months without being the least bit hungry. In fact, I was never less hungry than I was during those six months. It’s counterintuitive but true. You will have to give up some foods you probably enjoy eating, but while you can’t eat everything you like, you’ll like everything you eat.
I’m going to jump right to the point and tell you what works: the keto diet. Now, let me tell you why it works. The root problem that causes weight gain and prevents weight loss is insulin resistance. That happens over time when we ingest more carbohydrates than our bodies can process normally. We eat too many carbs, and our bodies produce a lot of insulin to clear the glucose from our bloodstream. Eventually, our cells become increasingly resistant to insulin’s signal to take up glucose. This leads to our bodies producing even more insulin to overcome the resistance, which leads to even greater insulin resistance, which leads to even more insulin production. It’s a vicious cycle that can often end in developing type-2 diabetes.
Another thing too much insulin does is prevents our bodies from using stored fat. Because we’re producing way too much insulin due to insulin resistance, our bodies can’t burn off excess weight. And in the meantime, our bodies are converting excess glucose into fat and storing it. So we begin gaining weight that we never lose. Another vicious cycle rears its ugly head.
Luckily, the solution is simple: stop eating too many carbohydrates! Lowering carbohydrate intake causes your body to produce less insulin. This in turn will reverse the insulin resistance that’s causing you to gain and retain weight. It’s really that simple. I tried to lose weight for years to no avail, but once I stumbled on the keto diet, I lost weight like magic.
The beauty of the keto diet is that it’s not hard to do. I mentioned that I was never more full than when I was losing weight. That’s because once the insulin resistance was reversed, my fat cells started discharging fatty acids into my bloodstream continuously. Fat produces satiety hormones; these make you feel ‘full’ (like not eating). The only real reason I ate at all during this time was to make sure I was getting sufficient protein. My caloric intake was roughly halved, but I was full all of the time. Hooray for satiety hormones!
The weight loss was effortless. I didn’t ‘do’ anything to make it happen. I didn’t starve myself. I didn’t burn a thousand calories a day in the gym. It turns out that bodies don’t want to carry around a lot of excess weight. That only happens when we get our insulin all out of whack. Once you get that right, your body will get much of its daily energy from stored fat instead of new food. I lost ten pounds a month over six months and went from 246 pounds to 191. Easy peasy!
I won’t go into great detail about the keto diet here. The topic could fill a book (which you can get free here). The basic idea is to replace carbohydrates in your diet with fats. Yes, you’ll lose fat by eating more fat! One thing fats (and proteins) do that carbohydrates don’t do is trigger the production of those aforementioned satiety hormones. It turns out that your body has a whole system of hormones that will keep you from overeating (as long as you don’t overindulge in carbs). You’ll actually get nauseous if you eat too much fat and protein (I know this from terrible experience). Just eat until you’re full and stop. Instead of meat, potatoes, and veggies, I just eliminate the potato and eat more (non-starchy) veggies. Use cream, butter, and olive oil to get more fat into your diet. If you start gorging on protein, you’ll feel poorly. You don’t need to increase your protein intake at all (as long as it’s already sufficient).
When you first start the diet, you’ll start eating a lot less (without hunger or effort, mind you), so make sure you do eat enough protein. As you get closer to losing your excess weight, your appetite will increase as your body has less fat in storage to fuel your daily energy needs. Just trust those satiety hormones to tell you how much to eat. No need to count calories. It turns out your body will do that for you (if you let it).
If this sounds like something you’re interested in exploring, download the book (free!) The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living by Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek (click the dark blue ‘Download PDF’ button). They’re academic researchers who’ve spent decades studying the keto diet. The book will explain in detail how to formulate a diet plan, why keto works (you got the Cliff Notes from me), and why it’s not only safe but healthy. I’ve been on keto since July 4, 2019 (almost three years!), and I’ve kept that 55 pounds I lost off. And believe me, if I can do it, anyone can!
