Antwon Rose
Say his name

I honor the memory of Antwon Rose and the beautiful life that he lived.
On June 19, 2018, Antwon was murdered in cold blood by a police officer who shot him as he ran out of a car. He was 17 years old. Absolutely nothing justified the killing of Antwon. He was unarmed and posed no threat to the police officer who shot him. The death of Antwon epitomized the historic and unending cycle of the use of excessive force perpetuated against Black men, women, young people, and children at the hands of the police.
Despite all of the peaceful protests that filled regions of East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and other areas as cries and demands for justice for Antwon prevailed, the judicial system found the police officer innocent. He was acquitted of all charges.
While the verdict shocked many, it actually came as no surprise.
The heinous man who recklessly stole the precious life of such an honorable college bound Black young man with such a pure heart and soul and such a bright future filled with so much promise walked away from his crime. He was deemed inculpable. The officer walked away as a totally free man who was unfazed by his vicious act.
Sadly, when the life of Antwon was viciously taken, his mother, family, friends, teachers, coaches, neighbors, and all who dearly loved him were sentenced to a lifetime of anguish and held captive by the question
WHY?
They will never know freedom again because they are entangled in and utterly consumed by eternal sadness and grief that won’t go away. Ever.
There will never be closure for Antwon because the crime against him continues to be an open book that reads LOUDLY and BOLDLY
“his life mattered!”
The memory of Antwon Rose personifies the Black Lives Matter Movement. On the second anniversary of his death, the community must continue to remain engaged to amplify the power of this movement.
