Summary

Rasheed Hooda discusses a creative approach to inviting writers to join Medium publications, emphasizing the benefits of curation and community support.

Abstract

In response to a challenge by Dr. Mehmet Yildiz to invite new writers daily, Rasheed Hooda explores the concept of group presentations as a more effective method of attracting writers compared to individual outreach. Recognizing the importance of curation for writers on Medium, he suggests leveraging publications like "The Partnered Pen" and "The Narrative," where writers can also act as editors, to address the frustration of waiting for story approvals from larger publications. Hooda encourages writers to extend invitations to their peers within these communities, advocating for a collaborative approach to achieve collective growth and success.

Answering the Challenge

A creative solution to inviting others

I love it when Dr. Mehmet Yildiz issues a challenge. It gets my creative juices flowing. Today, he challenged us to invite at least one new writer per day to get to the next milestone in our growth.

If you’re in sales and everyone is in sales, we all are selling something. As writers, we are not only selling ideas in our stories; we are also selling those stories as well. It is better and more effective if we can do a group presentation instead of selling one on one.

How can I do a group presentation, I asked myself. Where can I find a group of writers that I can address? Medium is a writer’s platform, just post it, and everyone will see. Except, everyone doesn’t. Even most of your followers won’t know what you have published. That’s the way the cookie crumbles.

A better way must exist to get it in front of a group of writers. Ask the right questions, and you’ll get the correct answer.

What do the writers on Medium want? What are they craving? Curation, of course. We’ve all heard from day one, every so-called expert on Medium has written about it; your best chance for curation is to get into one of the larger publications.

I write for a few of them, and it has helped, though it is not a guarantee. I am sure others have had the same issue. Besides, the Big Guys take forever before your stories are published. Most of the time, they don’t even tell you if they have decided not to accept your piece. So after waiting for a week, you might publish it yourself, or take a chance with another Big Guy. It is frustrating.

Where can I find others who are just as frustrated?

I am also a writer for a couple of publications that began with the intention to address that very issue. They are not huge, but they follow the same format as The Partnered Pen, which is a good-sized pub.

In case you’re not familiar with it, every writer on these publications is also an editor, and as an editor, you don’t have to wait for someone else to approve your story, you can do it yourself. The Narrative has a reasonably large number of writer/editors, and a few hundred followers.

I wrote an invitation for the writers who are on The Narrative. Let me know what you think. Also, if you belong to one of these publications, I challenge you to create your own invitation for them. BTW, the more calls we put out, the better our results will be.

Have fun writing, reading, and connecting, and as always, thank you for reading.
