No one intends such things to happen

Brothers start out being close

Although brothers are not always close friends, they generally love each other. They start out with life in the same family. Although they may not always get along and might fight occasionally, it is almost certain that they would not consider actually killing each other.

It has happened that brothers and sisters have killed siblings. It is a tragedy when that occurs, and it devastates families. An accidental shooting with a gun involved may cause it.

A twelve-year-old boy was killed by his younger brother in St. Louis. The boys were waiting at a house for a family member who was getting a haircut at the home. The brothers somehow found a gun and were playing with it.

David Carson wrote about the incident for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He reported:

Family members of a deceased 12-year-old boy grieve at the scene where police say the child was shot and killed while playing with a gun that he and a 10-year-old found inside a home in St. Louis on Tuesday, March 29, 2022. Police said the boys were with a parent who was getting a haircut in the home when the older boy was shot in the face. (David Carson/St. Louis Post-Dispatch via AP)

A woman was said to have been arrested the next day on a possible charge of endangering the welfare of a child.

There have been other cases of shootings in St. Louis by children with guns. Two cousins died in an apartment when one child fatally shot the other and then killed herself. Family members said it was an accident.

A young girl was wounded in an accidental self-inflicted shooting in February.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police Maj. Ryan Cousins urged residents to use gun locks. He said: “As an agency, we will come out and teach everyone how to use them. We do understand people are going to own guns; however, to protect these children, we want to ensure these guns are secured safely.” [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]

Gun control advocates report that hundreds of children under the age of eighteen are wounded or killed each year in the United States due to guns.

People who own guns have a responsibility to keep the guns safe and away from children. We should not store together guns and ammunition. Guns should be locked up and/or placed in a safe place where children cannot access them. Adults and older children who have guns should learn about the proper handling of guns.

It is always sad and tragic to see young children whose lives are cut short prematurely due to an accident with a gun.
