Another day in paradise
People don’t notice until it’s too late
Rays of light from a rising sun are warming my face. Birds are chirping in the trees. I’m surrounded by people, looking at me with sad eyes. My breath is growing shallow. My heartbeat is slowing down. I always dreamed of dying in such a peaceful way. But not like this…
The sunshine is not falling upon me in a cozy bed through a window. The people around me are not my family. I’m lying against a hard concrete wall on a busy street next to a small park. The night was cold and now my time has finally come. This is my last sunrise.
I’m homeless. The people around me? Strangers who pity me. Staring at the old man in ragged clothes, who’s trying to keep warm with old newspapers. Days ago, they passed me by without as much as a disgusted stare. For the past months, a stray dog was the only love I knew. The only one who’d show me empathy. We both never had much, but the little we had, we shared.
I hope somebody will take care of him, now that I can’t fulfill that duty any longer. My vision turns blurry and dim.
I bid you farewell, Ruffy. I hope someone takes you in. Gives you the home you deserve. Keeps you warm. Thank you for staying by my side when no one else did. You’re a good dog.
Warmth covers my cold hands as he licks them. His last goodbye.
Slowly his whimper turns to deep silence.
