Summary

The Saners, a Gandhi-inspired movement, is hosting a live online meeting on March 2nd, 2024, to discuss strategies for preventing climate collapse and promoting a more humane and sustainable civilization.

Abstract

The Saners, a burgeoning movement aiming to address climate change and foster a sustainable future, has scheduled its next live online meeting for Saturday, March 2nd, 2024, at 4pm New York City Time. The group, which has recently surpassed 300 members and has a significant following on Medium, advocates for immediate global action led by climate scientists to reduce fossil fuel usage and repair the planet. The movement emphasizes non-violent yet assertive tactics, creativity, and even humor to engage with and sabotage the efforts of those contributing to environmental destruction. The Saners believe in the potential for small movements to create significant change, drawing inspiration from historical precedents such as the ousting of Serbian dictator Milosevic, which began with just five college students. The upcoming meeting will focus on visibility actions for recruitment and coordinated international demonstrations, with the overarching goal of shifting the current values that undermine both human and Earth's intrinsic worth.

Opinions

  • The Saners movement views those who exploit the Earth for power and wealth as foolish rather than as enemies, aiming to save them from themselves.
  • The movement is critical of the current societal values that treat both humans and the Earth merely as tools for wealth and power accumulation.
  • There is a belief that even those in positions of environmental harm, such as hedge fund managers and oil company executives, do not truly wish to endanger future generations.
  • The Saners are committed to being loud, persistent, and immensely creative in their activism, intending to open the eyes of those contributing to climate collapse.
  • The movement acknowledges its relative inexperience in activism but expresses confidence in its understanding of effective strategies for success, based on historical study and movement theory.
  • The Saners prioritize the enjoyment of their members in the activism process, suggesting that their efforts could be "somewhat fun."

LINK TO RSVP.

That’s the time of the next live online meeting of The Saners, the Gandhi-inspired growing movement to save the Earth and build a more humane and sustainable civilization for our children.

We welcome new and existing members. If you are not yet a member, and want to be a part of this peaceful but assertive movement, use THIS LINK to sign up for our email list.

The Saners is still a small movement (just topping 300 signed up members) but growing. (I also have 1,800 followers on Medium, many of whom may be “silent” Saners.) We are aware that some of the most successful movements succeeded because they had a just and popular cause, and because they knew or learned how to run an effective movement. Successful movements CAN (and tend to) begin small. For example, the ousting of Serbian dictator Milosevic began with just 5 college students.

A Positive Movement

We, as a movement, believe we have no enemies. We recognize that the world is dominated by systems and people that treat the planet as a mere resource for generating power and wealth. Those systems and the people who support them are foolish and the destruction must be stopped. But we see us as saving foolish people from themselves.

We are convinced that hedge fund managers and oil company executives (like the rest of us) don’t actually want to doom their grandchildren to struggling for survival on a ruined Earth. In fact, we are pretty sure of this. But that seems like an abstraction to them, and they focus on their immediate challenges — which is the next quarterly profit.

We intend to open their eyes while also sabotaging their efforts through all kinds of non-cooperation. We will also be loud and persistent — and immensely creative, even humorous! — in spreading our messages.

Our (Nominal) Objective

The objective of The Saners movement is to prevent climate collapse. More specifically:

We demand an immediate worldwide emergency program, led by climate scientists, to slash fossil fuels, end climate abuse and repair our planet.

This is our focus and core message. But we go beyond this. We believe that our climate is in danger because our entire civilization has been built on foolish and dangerous values. Neither human beings, nor the Earth are actually valued in themselves. Under the values of our current systems, both are simply tools to be exploited in pursuit of wealth and power.

Human beings are mere human resources. And the Earth is a source of raw material — as well as being a dumping ground for waste.

This attitude is destroying us and it is literally insane. (That’s why our group is called The Saners.)

Where Are We Now?

To be honest, although we are an enthusiastic group, we are just now finding our footing. We are not (for the most part) experienced activists. I, myself, have been busy studying history and movement theory — because to succeed, we must understand what approaches work and which do not.

At this point, I’m convinced that I know enough for us to succeed. But that’s if we execute our strategy properly, and if we continue to learn and correct course as necessary. But this should all be doable, and — if we do it right — potentially somewhat fun!

Right now, with 300+ members widely scattered, the most viable kinds of actions are: 1. Visibility actions aimed at recruiting new members, and 2. Coordinated actions in various cities demonstrating our international scope.

These potential actions will be part of the discussion in this upcoming meeting. If you want to attend, you can sign up using THIS LINK.

The March 2nd meeting will be 40 minutes and is limited to 99 attendees. However, if all the spots are filled, I will schedule a second meeting covering the same ground.

If you want to attend but cannot make the meeting, please let me know in the comments what days and times are best for you!
