And Then You Kissed Me

I remember you pulled me up against the large cedar, the massive tree’s scent lay heavy on the breeze — then… you kissed me

We were last here twenty-five years ago.

Back then, we laughed and chattered as we ran through the woods, bathed in our love for each other.

Now you are silent, which gives me time to replay that day in my mind.

It wasn’t our first kiss, but it was my last one as a single girl.

You slid down my body until your knees hit the forest floor, before grabbing a small solitary diamond ring from your jeans pocket, audaciously slipping it on my finger.

“You will marry me, won’t you, Clem?” Your voice only slightly hesitant.

I felt and acted like I was in the movies, dramatically throwing my hand towards the sky and examining the stone in the shaded sunlight.

“Oh yes Billy, yes… I will.”

I think that may have been the happiest day of my life. The best decision I ever made.

And now — while I sprinkle your ashes around the gnarled tree trunk, tasting my tears, I curse the world for taking you from me too soon, but thank the lord for twenty-five wonderful years together.

A reader said to me yesterday — “You do seem to have a thing for killers.” It is true, my go-to writing style is transgressive. So for a change, today my story is a bog-standard romance :-) Oh dear — someone still died!
