And The Winner of This Year’s Award
In a quantum time loop? think outside the box

The clock blinked the time: 2:09 pm. Hannah dreaded what was about to happen, and yet yearned for it with every atom in her body.
Six minutes to go. In six minutes, she’d be sitting in the front of the auditorium, waiting to go on stage and accept her award.
Except that when this occurred for the first time in 1983, she never made it on stage. When her name was announced, she stood up, took five steps toward the platform, and tripped over the camera dolly cord. 911 was called and she spent two days in the hospital with a concussion.
The second time she opened her eyes and found herself sitting in the auditorium seat with the crowd clapping behind her, she was confused and alarmed.
When she heard her name spoken, she stood up and walked toward the stage, thinking perhaps she was dreaming.
Then she saw the dolly cord and stepped carefully over it. Congratulating herself on the near miss, she didn’t see the cameraman adjusting the location of his equipment, and tripped anyway.
Struggling to sit up, she found herself sitting in her car with the engine idling and cars angrily honking behind her while the traffic light turned red. The bank sign on the right ahead said the time was 2:15.
That was two weeks ago.
Since then, Hannah experienced the same event every day at the same exact time. For approximately five minutes she re-lived the same sequence of events.
Able to retain the memory of each occurrence, she had been unable so far to affect the outcome. This time, however, would be different. She had a plan.
2:14 pm. Less than one minute to go; Hannah held the thought in her mind and closed her eyes.
The sound of thunderous clapping brought her head up and her eyes opened wide. Her name was being announced from the stage, but she sat unmoving. She felt a tapping on her shoulder.
“They’re calling for you, Hannah.”
She nodded, but remained seated; her brain urging her to respond, her muscles filling with adrenaline. She denied it all, breathing through it.
She checked her wrist and noted the second hand on her watch as it ticked up to the next minute.
2:16 pm. The scene around her froze. No sound, no movement. The announcer at the podium stepped away and walked down the steps toward her, smiling and holding out her hand.
“Hannah. Welcome. Of all the candidates we chose, you were the fastest at working through the puzzle. Please, come meet the rest of the coalition.”
