And Still God Loves Us
A poem

Hate crimes on the rise White nationalists freed from any restraints Encouraged by Fox News And He Who Shall Not Be Named And still God loves us
Child perpetrators of crime and mayhem Making a mockery of our judicial system Social safety nets torn and frayed Schools no longer sanctuaries of safety Often exploited by extremists of all persuasions to further their own agenda Citadels of learning but a memory Critical thinking a lost art And still God loves us
Civil discourse an oxymoron Political correctness replaces common sense Christian “values” foster anger and fear Condemnation and separation One issue activists demonize opponents And still God loves us
Climate change deniers Election fraud frauds Demagogues rise to capture every controversy and audience Blind leading the blind Sheep willing to follow the loudest voice And still God loves us
Uniting to support war “over there” Unwilling to combat poverty here Descendants of immigrants wishing to exclude new ones While employers are unable to find enough workers To staff essential services And still God loves us
Child pornography sites abound on the internet Sexual abuse of children occurs in all communities Women treated as mere sexual commodities to be bartered and sold Young girls trained to put a high value on being sexually desirable objects And still God loves us
Individuals unwilling to accept responsibility For the welfare of all members of their community As housing prices crush the hopes of many young couples Of ever achieving the American Dream While others amass wealth that Midas would have envied And still God loves us
Child and elder care costs Medical expenses Food inadequacy Leave many in desperate financial straits Forced to make choices that would have made even Solomon quake And still God loves us
I myself am part of the problem Too often allowing anger to overtake me Confronting rather than conversing Pride keeping me apart from others Afraid to share my resources to help others in greater need For fear that some day in the future I might not have enough Allowing myself to be overwhelmed both by the aging of my body And family concerns Most of all failing to trust in God And still God loves me
So who am I not to love myself Who are we not to love one another
