Archeology

Ancient City of Mohenjo Daro

A blast from the past in the Indus Valley of Pakistan.

source

I remember being mesmerized as a child, reading about the archeological sites of the Indian sub-continent known as Mohenjo Daro and Harrapa. I must have been 8 or 9 years old.

The cities were discovered and excavated around a hundred years ago. In 1980, it became one of the world heritage sites.

As a teenager, I planned on going to visit it since it wasn’t too far from Karachi, where I lived but never did.

It is impressive to see a city from the past, about 4,500 years old, to be so “advanced.” The Indus civilization was contemporaneous with Babylon and ancient Egypt.

I am more mesmerized today, looking at the pictures online.

Today’s prompt is Once lost, Now found. The first thing to pop into my head as I read the prompt was Mohenjo Daro, which literally means “Mound of the Dead.” That was the name the natives of Sind (Indus) Valley called it.

I didn’t realize how deeply rooted my thoughts are with world geography and travel. As soon as it becomes safe to move around again, I am going to resume my nomadic lifestyle. I have a plan in mind, but I haven’t shared it with many people. We’ll see how things develop. For now, I am staying put.

Thank you, Amy Marley, for the nudge to write with SCBWI prompts. Today’s prompt: Once Lost, Now Found

As always, thank you for reading and responding.
