Summary

In a family outing to their favorite Thai restaurant, the author's mention of enjoying Jason Bourne films causes a humorous misunderstanding.

Abstract

During a family dinner at a favored Thai restaurant, the conversation turned to discussing favorite movies. The author expressed their fondness for the Jason Bourne series, which they admire for the slickness and cleverness of the protagonist's actions, contrasting it with their own life. Unfortunately, the timing of the declaration led to an unexpected silence, amplifying the impact of their statement and causing a nearby patron to mishear it as a personal revelation rather than a film preference, leading to a comical situation.

Opinions

  • The author has a clear appreciation for the Jason Bourne films, particularly noting their fast pace and cleverness.
  • There is an implied self-deprecating humor in the author's comparison between the exciting life of Jason Bourne and their own.
  • The author finds the unexpected reaction from the fellow patron amusing, as it stems from a misunderstanding due to the restaurant's quiet ambiance.

An Unfortunate Turn of Phrase

So we were in a rather nice Thai restaurant my family like to go to for special occasions, and as the usual conversation had dwindled, had got on to discussing which films we liked.

The usual classics were mentioned. Now I have always loved the Jason Bourne films, fast-paced, full of action, a bit too violent in places, but just as good as the Bond franchise. I suppose what I like about the Bourne films is that everything he does is so slick and clever, quite unlike my own life, as this next exchange illustrates.

So it came to my turn to say what I liked, and by misfortune it was one of those moments when a room unexpectedly goes quiet, so my subsequent proud revelation that I loved the Bourne films had more of an impact than I expected.

The chap at the next table nearly choked on his duck soup, having clearly misheard my innocent revelation, and assumed I was over-sharing. We haven’t been for a Thai meal for a while.
