Abstract

Snowy Owl. Another bird to add to my list, and I walked away very happy that I got to see such a fine creature. An Unexpected Guest in Cypress, California: Photographing the Mysterious Appearance of the Snowy Owl

© Deborah Kunzie Photographer

In the unlikeliest of places, Cypress, California, a remarkable visitor leaves the entire community in awe — a snowy owl of all things.

And luck would have it, I was there.

Everyone heard about the Snowy Owl visiting this neighborhood, and I happened to be visiting my best friends only 15 minutes from the location.

Trying to park the car once I found the street was the challenge. Photographers from everywhere armed with all their equipment, cameras, tripods, and not to mention, news reporters. What a spectacle.

It wasn’t difficult to find; just had to look for the group of people standing in the street waiting for the star of the show to do something.

It was December 31st, 2022, the day I got my one and only shots of a Snowy Owl. Another bird to add to my list, and I walked away very happy that I got to see such a fine creature. It wasn’t easy photographing him, and he seemed to like standing next to pipes coming from the rooftops of the houses he liked to sit on.

Observing the crowd, he likely pondered the source of their fascination, just as they, in turn, fixed their gazes upon him. Thus, they all remained in their places throughout the day, eagerly awaiting any signs of activity. The situation verged on the brink of comedy.

After what felt like an eternity, I managed to capture a few shots that showed the snowy owl’s beauty and intrigue. Sometimes with its wings slightly spread, other times just standing with a gaze, the owl seemed to be telling a story of its own, one that might remain a mystery forever. No one at the time knew where he came from or why but he was there in living color. If you want to read more about him, you can read the article that CNN wrote about him.

Nonetheless, it was the last photograph of bird activity for me during 2022. A nice Christmas and a great way to end the year.
