An Unconventional Trick To Improve Your Memory
It’s easier than you think
A memory is made up of pieces of information taken in and processed by the brain in a way that is unique to each individual.
David Thomas
Being a student, there’s never a dearth of examinations.Viva and practicals are always lurking around the corner.
Unfortunately, our education system focuses on rote learning more than gaining conceptual understanding for the most part.
So as a student, I am always expected to be at the top of my memory game. But each semester has 8 subjects and each subject’s textbook has 500 Pages on an average.
Remembering such a hug amount of content is a Herculean task.
I too struggled to remember stuff that I read. Even when I read something a day before I would fumble even while explaining the content I had read just the day before.
Needless to say, I was performing poorly in my examinations. I would read for hours on end but couldn’t replicate the same in the exams.
Sounds familiar? I’m sure it does!
It had started to impact my self confidence.
I was starting to feel I was slow witted and futile. I couldn’t remember stuff even after working my ass off while other students managed it as if it were a piece of cake.
Enough was enough. My frustration had reached it’s zenith.
I decided this has to change.
In a bid to improve my memory, I started exploring various online platforms for memory improvement ideas.
That’s when I stumbled upon a TEDx video by Krishan Chahal(known as Memory King) who explained this wonderful trick that I felt should be shared with everyone.
Everyday before going to sleep, recall your entire day’s routine.
Be sure to include the details such as:-
- At what time did you wake up exactly.
- Which family member did you see first when you woke up.
- What did you eat for lunch breakfast and dinner.
- At what time did you start your work.
- Noticed an object you don’t usually pay attention to? Include that too in your little memory movie.
I assure you, this unconventional trick will do wonders to your memory. The best part is it takes hardly 5 minutes to practise but it works surprisingly well!
To be honest, even I was sceptical at first.
Nonetheless I decided to give it a try and to my amazement it actually worked.
My memory retention ability has increased to a great extent and I marvel at the way I am able to remember the things I used to forget so easily before.
According to the studies, trying to remember things rather than being reliant on your device for everything is an excellent exercise for your brain.
The neurons in your brain expand, establishing new connections thereby enhancing your memory.
This is what makes this exercise an excellent way to improve your memory.
In the beginning, it may so happen that you may fall asleep without completing the process let alone being able to recollect the whole day.
But as you progress further, you’ll become lucid at it.
Bonus
It is also an indirect exercise that forces you to be more mindful in everything you do.
Also, it can be used as an opportunity to reflect on your day.
Takeaway
Right before sleeping, walk through your day in your mind. Everything you saw and everything you did.
The more you can recollect, the better.
According to science, it takes 21 days to form a habit.
So try practising this technique for 21 consecutive days and witness the change yourself.
It is rightly said:-
You lose your immortality when you lose your memory.
