Summary

Martin Dean and his sister Paula Dean-De Luca, executives at Drop and Go Shipping, advocate for employees to view their employment as a stepping stone to starting their own businesses and building a legacy, emphasizing the importance of saving and investing in one's own future.

Abstract

At a company meeting, Martin Dean, the vice-president of Drop and Go Shipping, along with his sister and company president Paula Dean-De Luca, address a group of newly hired employees. They share their vision of transforming the company into a family business where only blood relatives will be employed in the future. Martin emphasizes that employment should be a temporary phase in one's life, a means to gain experience and save for starting one's own business. He encourages the employees to use their time at the company to prepare for future entrepreneurship, with the goal of creating a lasting legacy. The siblings believe that traditional employers keep employees in servitude by not encouraging them to build their own legacies, and they aim to break this cycle by supporting their employees' ambitions to become business owners themselves.

“Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please,” Martin Dean said. His voice carried throughout the spacious conference room, thanks to the microphone attached to the podium he stood before, and the many speakers that were positioned on the high ceiling. The fifty-year-old Italian American was sharply dressed. He looked as if he had come from money, and he had.

The once talkative crowd of diverse individuals had become eerily quiet immediately after Martin’s request. They all now had their eyes trained on the man of the hour, eager to hear what he had to say.

“Thank you. As you all should know, my name is Martin Dean. And the lovely lady seated here to my right is my sister, Paula Dean-De Luca. Paula, acknowledge the crowd, please.”

Paula stood up, smiled, and waved a hand at the crowd before them. Like her younger brother, the fifty-five-year-old, dark-haired beauty was dressed to impress. She retook her seat.

Martin resumed talking, “I’m the vice-president of Drop and Go Shipping, and Paula is the president. She and I invested portions of our inheritance money into starting this business. Our father died five years ago and left us, as well as our other eight siblings, enormous sums of money. Anyway, enough about that. I want to share with you something you won’t get at no other place of business, and I’d be willing to wager the rest of my inheritance on this.”

There was light rumbling from the crowd after the tail end of Martin’s statement. Without question, he had their undivided attention.

“My father taught me and my siblings a lot, but what I’ll remember most of all is that he told us to always live our truth. And this was funny to me, seeing he shared with us. He wasn’t always an honest man. I take it he wanted his children to be better than he ever was. Either or I loved my father, flaws and all.”

The crowd applauded.

“Thank you. Thank you. But getting back to what I need to share with you all. All of you here were deemed the best of the best by the hiring staff, so you should give yourselves a round of applause. Come on now! Give yourselves a standing ovation!”

The crowd of people rose to their feet and started clapping ferociously. After a few seconds, they retook their seats.

“Excellent. Now, without further delay. This opportunity you’ve all been afforded is for five years, no more or no less. We would love it if you all lasted the duration, but seeing I’m a realist, I just don’t foresee that being the case. Your future here will depend solely on your actions. Right now, this is a business. But with your help, we’re looking to turn this into a family business. Now, let me give you our definition of a family business. It’s simple really, nothing but blood relatives will eventually be employed here.”

The crowd began rumbling after Martin’s last statement.

“Now, now. Let me explain. Remember, I said I was going to share with you something you won’t get at no other place of business. Well, the family business aspect is a part of the forthcoming revelation. Contrary to popular belief, none of you were meant to retire from no other place of business, but your own. When you work for someone else, it’s for two reasons. The first, is so you can help turn their business into a family business. And second, so you can save portions of your weekly or bi-weekly income, with the intent of eventually having your own family business. What do you think of that? Has any other employer you’ve ever had, said anything remotely close to what you just heard?

The crowd began responding with various means of saying no.

“Of course, they haven’t. Why? Because they don’t want you to build a legacy. They want to keep you and yours in the position of servitude, while me and my sister want to help you become your own business owners. These are the secrets the selfish ones hoard so they’ll continue to get wealthy, while you continue to struggle to make ends meet. But we’re here to set the record straight. Offer you all the opportunity to experience the lifestyle you all deserve.”

The crowd applauded and cheered. Martin looked over at Paula, who was smiling. She was extremely proud of her baby brother, who loved her more than any of their other siblings.

“That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. Here at Drop and Go Shipping, you’re going to receive wages where you’ll be able to live comfortably, as well as have enough to save for future entrepreneurship. But again, your success will depend on your actions. Meaning, that you’ll need to do what’s expected of you, and if so, you’ll be in a position to create your own legacy. So, is everyone ready to get started?”

The crowd rose to their feet and applauded and cheered.

“Great job, baby brother. Father would be as proud of you as I am of you right now,” Paula said cheerfully. She stood next to Martin with her arm around his shoulder.

“Thank you, big sis. It feels good to do right by others. I’m looking forward to seeing how many of them actually become business owners,” Martin said cheerfully.

“As am I, baby brother. As am I.”

Moral of the story: Contrary to popular belief, being an employee at a business that’s not ours was only meant to be temporary. No amount of money could ever make up for the time and energy required to get it, but if the money is used wisely, it won’t seem like such a lopsided exchange. We were all meant to experience the highest form of greatness, but unfortunately, everyone won’t realize this. Those who won’t, will retire too old and too tired to enjoy the rest of their days, as it was meant to be. But those who will, will retire sooner than expected, start their own businesses, and live the rest of their days with enough energy to do all the things they love, accordingly.
