How can you be free from all attachments?

You cannot really say you are free and happy unless you achieve this one thing

What is freedom? Does freedom bring peace and happiness? How can you say that you are free? Do making choices make you free? Can you make your choices freely? Is being free enough to have freedom? Is there only one type of freedom? Is freedom valuable if it comes without a price and effort? Is freedom learned or acquired?

Is it not great to ask tough questions? I like these types of tough questions as they help us question what we know and what we think we know. They stretch our mental limits and expand our consciousness. Let us ask more of the devil`s advocate type of questions to enrich the thought process?

Would you be totally happy if you were rich? Would you still be happy if you were rich but with limited freedom of thought and behavior? Or can you be happy when you are alone? Can you be happy without recognition and appreciation from others? Can you act with free will without being happy?

Throughout history, people and nations ran after freedom because it was the only way to welfare and happiness. Freedom was the foundation to let them walk their ways. It gives people the chance to make choices and use their free wills. We can then easily say that being able to use our free will helps with freedom and being happy. This leads to FREEDOM OF CHOICE. Besides, we can say that being free and freedom are different things even if they are interlinked. Being free leads to another type of freedom; FREEDOM OF BEHAVIOR.

As we have already found out two types of freedoms, could there be more? I am sure there are more. Let`s discover them together.

But let us first do something to be able to have a holistic approach in our quest to discover more types of freedoms.

We, humans, have four quadrants of interactions with life; physical, mental, emotional (also covering the social aspect) and spiritual. We are whole and complete with these four aspects of being human. Therefore classifying types of freedoms by these quadrants will help us see the big picture.

1-PHYSICAL QUADRANT — Anything with physical nature and related to self go into this quadrant.

Freedom of behavior is the ability to chose how we react or respond to external stimuli.

Freedom to work is a must to make a living, take care of our family, meet our needs. Freedom of work also comes with the freedom of assembly for employees to get organized to pursue safer working conditions, better compensation, and benefits.

Freedom to elect and be elected is one of the pillars of democracy.

2-MENTAL QUADRANT — anything related to intellect and mental activity

Learning freedom gives us the chance to get an education and expand our skills, knowledge, and abilities (SKA)

Freedom of thought is perhaps the strongest of all types of freedoms as we can think whatever we want even when we are kept alone behind walls. In many cultures, freedom of thought is said to be the mother of all types of freedoms, but that is incomplete. Moreover, subliminal messages can also manipulate our freedom of thought. Disinformation techniques, subliminal manipulation methods, being attached to the emotional backlog, fears, acquired thought patterns prevent total freedom of thought.

3-EMOTIONAL/SOCIAL QUANDRANT — anything related to our emotional states and interactions with the outer world

Freedom of communication is a basic need for us as we are social animals.

Freedom of expression is something that complements communication and thinking. It is about standing up for ourselves and when needed for others too. It is about speaking up to do the right thing. That is a hard one.

Freedom to travel is another key one. In medieval times, only the guilds and people with special skills such as masons were allowed to travel in Europe while people were to stay and live where they are. The feudal system was preventing normal citizens from traveling. These times changed fortunately for many parts of the world now.

Freedom to marry or choose a partner is a preference but might be a preference, but it is freedom or a right.

4-SPIRITUAL- anything related to metaphysics and divine interactions

Freedom of belief has been the core reason for many wars and fights throughout human history. In the past, life and cosmos were described by mostly metaphysics, but with science, the portion of metaphysics is getting smaller while physics is getting bigger each day. But life is more than what we see, so meta-physics still have a substantial portion that comes out into play as belief.

We can talk about more types of freedoms, but it is not the point of this article. I guess you have understood by now that freedom is key to happiness, and welfare starts by being free. NEVERTHELESS, being free does not guarantee freedom.

Even though freedom opens up the path for choices, as long as we are bound by our desires, attachments, fears, strong emotions, thought patterns, unconscious biases, and more, we cannot talk about real freedom because only 6% of our behaviors are conscious. That is, 94% of our actions and behaviors are driven by our subconscious, which was mainly shaped in early childhood. That means that we are not really free in our choices as our subconscious determines our conscious lives. Ironically, we still say we have freedom of choice and are proud of our successful choice without knowing why we chose them.

The mother or foundation of all types of freedom is FREEDOM OF MIND. It is easy to take it as freedom of thought, but it is not. We can think whatever we want, but that does not make our thinking process free of attachments, illusions, fears and anxieties, personal and cultural lenses and biases. Do you see what I mean?

Without the freedom of mind…

  • we will react automatically and unconsciously to external stimuli life. Freedom of mind gives us the chance to respond.
  • we will work for the dreams and wishes of others, including our elders and the core family, instead of realizing our dreams. That means living the life of others instead of living your life.
  • we will get stuck with what we know and fell into the trap of dogma, bigotry, and ignorance, while freedom of mind brings us to the beginner`s mind like a child and prompts us to discover life in every breath.
  • freedom thought will be repeating the same learned and acquired ideas again and again like a parrot instead of learning and talking about new things in this vast universe full of the richness of diversity.
  • we will fall in love with the visual appearances of others, not listen to others by heart, and miss to read between the rows. Because 7% of communication is words, 38% is voice, and 55% is body language. Moreover, talking is four times slower than thinking, and language is not enough to convey all our thoughts and emotions. Do you recognize what I mean? Only a free mind can ask questions and surf through the emotional barriers of others. Spending words and listening is not communication.
  • freedom of expression becomes self-talk or a method to please ourselves to extinguish the fires of deep suffering within ourselves. Is it not better to speak to influence others for the better?
  • freedom to marry or choose a partner becomes an act of social exchange of needs. Many marriages end in these days because of the chemical marriages as I call them. We subconsciously meet our needs with someone we love, and then people change through the years, and the love is gone. Many people cannot figure out the unconditional reasons as to why they loved their partner. Think about it. Why not find true love which can stand any type of storm?
  • even believing becomes a dogma without questioning what we were told and given. We can still have faith while challenging to learn more. Science would not have developed unless we questioned everything and rose stronger in the Renaissance Period through the ashes of the dogmatic 1000-year-long Scholastic Period. It is possible to believe and question.

That is, no type of freedom is free from attachment without the freedom of mind because we act by our subconscious programming, which took place during early childhood. Can we break it? DEFINITELY YES, but that will be another article.

Buddhism talks about three types of interactions with the world. ATTACHMENT, DETACHMENT, and NON-ATTACHMENT.

Attachment is adhering firmly to material possessions, while detachment is ignoring them and isolating yourself to be away from any temptations. Non-attachment is the middle-way, which is about acquiring material possessions but without being a slave of them. It is living without idols. Only freedom of mind can help reach a state of non-attachment.

Last question. Is it possible to achieve freedom of mind 100%?

In a universe where everything is interconnected and interdependent, that is quite impossible. But prophets and saints are considered to have achieved it. For ordinary people like us, the best is to let go of any attachments and live a non-attached life. I will also write about how to do it later on.
