OPEN LETTERS
An Open Letter to Those I Gave the Clap
Please forgive me

Dear Fellow Writer,
I am so sorry, I feel awful, I hope you can forgive me.
I am new to this writing platform. I just assumed the “clap” system was similar to all the other social media platforms. Little did I know, that if I held the button a little bit longer then the “claps” increase all the way up to fifty whole claps.
Here I was reading story after story and feeling super generous by “clapping” once for each article. I’m mortified.
I may as well have given you all the clap!
It’s only now since I have created my own writing habit and been the recipient of one clap, that I have learned the error of my ways and of the magic possibility of a full round of applause, sod the single clap.
Imagine we were at the theatre or a comedy show (pre COVID19 days obviously), no one ever claps once. If the audience provided a single clap at the theatre the anti-climax would be palpable, the performers would feel broken and underwhelmed.
I hope I didn’t underwhelm you. I wasn’t aware, I didn’t know. But now I do, I promise I will not make this mistake again. If I feel a story is worth my clap, I will ensure I give at least twenty. Never again will I give a single clap.
The only use for a single clap is to kill a mosquito
Just so you know, upon realizing the error of my ways, I did try to retrace my online footsteps and go back to each story that I generously gave a clap to and increase it all the way up to fifty.
It works both ways, maybe this is karma. A little part of my spirit is crushed when I receive one clap and not the possible fifty. Claps aren’t limited, we can give them out as we please, we have an infinite number of claps, and yet sometimes we hoard them, scrooge them away to go moldy when they would be better off on someone else's story.
So here’s a little clap gauge: 0 claps = you suck; 1 clap = I hate you; 2–10 claps = yeah you’re ok; 11–30 claps = you’re pretty good actually; 31–45 claps = you go my writer, friend; 46–50 claps = you write awesome stuff and I want to support you!
If you are going to clap, don’t just clap once!
Sincerest apologies again
A Writer in Learning
