WandaVision Raised My Expectations

An Open Letter to The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

Please Be Fabulous

Dear Falcon and the Winter Soldier,

We’ve all just endured the most prolonged weekend in 2021 so far. Up until January 15th, we didn’t realize how good WandaVision would be.

It’s not your fault, but expectations have been raised.

And frankly, we’ve also gotten used to more greatness every week. What’s worse than those three words we all came to loathe?

Please Stand By — The worst three words of the MCU language.

I’ll tell you what’s worse. A two-week wait until the next MCU episode.

I’m sure your marketing team knows what it’s doing. The wait is really putting the fan in fanatic.

I’ve watched three different MCU movies this weekend. I even almost added Thor Dark World to the mix. Fortunately, I may be a fanatic, but I’m not a masochist.

We only thought waiting for one to two movies to drop every one to two years was hard. Two weeks is harder.

Why? Because I have it on good authority that these Disney+ episodes rival the movies.

WandaVision was better than any of the MCU movies — One of Scott Hughey’s close friends.

Waiting for two weeks for another installment felt like Dr. Strange explaining to Dormammu that, “I’ve come to bargain.”

And here’s the thing. We don’t even know if you’re going to be good.

Prior to WandaVision, want to hear a list of MCU characters I would have asked for a TV series about?

Loki, Hulk, Dr. Strange, Rocket, War Machine, Black Widow, Gamora, Ant-Man, Wanda, Wasp.

Look. I’m stopping at ten to not hurt your feelings. You make the list eventually. You do. But, when I heard the initial line-up of MCU shows, yours was my least anticipated one. To be fair, WandaVision was the second least anticipated, at least until I saw the first trailer.

Before WandaVision, all I needed out of you was not to be bad.

That’s not enough anymore. Sorry, but WandaVision raised the bar.

I don’t need you to be as good. I don’t even require you to be a sitcom turned into mystery turned into superhero drama turned, eventually, into an all-out action romp, followed by more drama.

Be the second-best show so far of 2021. That’s all I ask of you.

Oh, and if that’s not too much, consider this short wishlist.

  • A Steve Rogers cameo.
  • But don’t kill Steve Rogers.
  • Seriously, I’ve heard rumors. This is much too soon after Iron Man. We see his snap in the R of the Marvel credits now, and it still hurts.
  • Look, if you’re going to just bring him in to kill him, then don’t even do the cameo thing. We just saw Vision die for the third time. Let that be enough beloved character deaths for now — you bloodthirsty animals.

Okay. I take it back. All I need is for you to be the second-best television show of the year and to not kill Captain America.

Yours truly,

A superfan

Scott Hughey finds himself way more excited about WandaVision than he thought he would be. He can barely imagine the anticipation once She-Hulk, Loki, and What If? are about to start.
