SATIRE, OF COURSE!

An Open Letter to the Critic of my Views on the Trump Car Rally I Witnessed

Thank you so much for setting me on the right path. You’re making Michael great again.

“What a load of nonsense” was your opening salvo in response to this story …

I’ll admit that at first I was a bit taken aback.

However, after careful reflection on the loving and kind, but spirited, tone in which you responded I now think about your intro differently.

I see it now as an expression of tough love and as a way to get my attention for the important lessons and corrections you delivered. Your subliminal message now means everything to me.

I now see “What a load of nonsense!” like the vigorous shake one must occasionally deliver to a wailing infant. It’s an attention-getter, sure to startle, but opening the way for the well-reasoned discussion to follow. I benefited in just the same way a distressed infant would, so thank you.

Then you tacked a little and introduced some subtle notes of jocularity with your comment “Good grief, the histrionics!” and your reference to my “liberal privilege.”

Oh, I had a good laugh about that. Thank you once again for your kind, lighthearted and understanding tone with me. Perfect!

After all, as a 65-year-old Jew, one generation removed from direct knowledge of Nazi Germany, what could I possibly understand about how a nation can go from street demonstrations of nationalism to slaughter of innocent millions in the span of a few years? It would have been silly of me to reference the fact that my cultural and social “family tree” was pruned of 6 million members while the world stood by and did little.

Instead my story traded on the contrast between the beautiful serenity of the countryside on Hawaii’s garden isle with the loud and intrusive Trump cavalcade of trucks honking and demanding attention while flying large flags, as drivers and passengers gestured out the windows. My notion, that the car rally was unnecessarily boisterous and vaguely threatening was clearly wrong. Thank you for clearing that up.

I have heard rumors that many white supremacists, Neo-Nazis and members of the alt right support Trump. He in turn seems to give them shelter and comfort when, as the leader of the free world, he could be condemning their actions and beliefs.

But again, after a careful examination of the facts, I now realize that these whispers are all likely fake news. I will, as you so gently suggested, check my liberal privilege at the door and choke back my histrionics.

Again, my heartfelt thanks for your supportive bonding words which have set me on the right path.

I’m not entirely sure what to make of your line “But that time is over.”

It floated there freely, not entirely connected to your well-wrought thoughts which bracketed it. I hope you’re echoing Trump’s message to the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by,” but I can’t know that. Here’s hoping though. They need all the help and support we can possibly give them. Bravo!

Your wrap-up was priceless. From one healthcare professional to another I salute you.

Even from afar, through the muddled haze that is my writing, you were able to discern that I was either an addict, a PTSD sufferer or perhaps clinically depressed or anxious and prone to “triggering.” That simple yet elegant and perceptive insight so warmed my bleeding heart.

“You need treatment for your triggering responses.”

And, like the highly-trained and empathetic modern miracle worker that you are, you signed off. Way to put the ball in my court! Again, my gratitude knows no bounds.

For now though, and before I seek curative therapy for my “triggering responses,” I’ll repeat the little ditty that capped off my story on my impressions of the Trump Rally and again venture:

“Never again” is a powerful message.

Can “Make America Great Again” topple it?

In my triggered, liberally-privileged and histrionic but humble opinion … quite possibly.

Oh, and lest I forget, from one gratitude-filled American to another, thank YOU! for the “view” and the “read” of my Trump Rally story above. What, no “claps” though? I’m verklempt.
