SERIOUS
An Open Letter to Myself When I’m Tired
Halt — stop confusing fatigue with not being good enough
Dear Self,
I’m sending this to you from a loving place because you deserve care and compassion and consideration all the time — but especially when you’re worn out. And sometimes that happens without warning and it’s nobody’s fault, certainly not yours.
And yet your mind, or should I say your Psychic Overlord, gives you a hard time when you’re exhausted — expecting too much from you just when you have nothing to give.
Some of the thoughts that rise to the surface when you’re knackered are clues — not clues that you’re a bad person, but little warnings that you are too tired to think straight, much less care for yourself.
For instance, when you start thinking about people who’ve treated you badly in the past — you’re tired.
When you wonder why you aren’t happier — it’s the fatigue talking.
When you question whether life will ever be “good enough” — that’s entirely because, right now, you feel overwhelmed by the act of putting one foot in front of the other.
Remember HALT?
Never make any big decisions when you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired.
And by now you’ve been down this road: you can be tired and hungry and angry all at once because fatigue doesn’t play fair.
I’ve been noticing that you have a habit — I won’t say a bad habit, but let’s say a habit that’s doing you no good — of criticizing when you are tired. And the worse the fatigue is, the more your mind seems to find fault. You might feel a little critical of others, but your main target is the nearest one, the easiest one: you.
Feeling bad but can’t say why? Might as well cast blame. It’s a default program and I want you to consider…what would it be like to stop blaming yourself? How would it feel to let go of the guilt that rises up whenever you are exhausted?
After a night of tossing and turning only to wake up unrefreshed, the mind attacks right away. Everything about the day seems like one, big, impossible hurdle.
But it’s not true, not at all! It’s just another day. The sky may be gray, or blue. The birds might be singing, or quiet. There could be a thin stream of light, just after sunrise — or it might look like the middle of the night. It’s just another day like all the ones before and the ones to come. So, if you are tired, that’s okay. Remember, it’s fine to take it easy. That’s the best thing you can do for yourself: accept, and rest.
Feeling fatigue isn’t a reflection on your character. It’s from bad sleep or whatever weird thing might be happening in your body. Of, maybe you overdid it a little bit the day before. It happens.
You might need to do things slowly, or do less.
Give yourself a break and let your fatigue be there without hating it or stubbornly crossing your arms and wishing it away. It’s there, and it’s okay. Your tiredness isn’t you but only a passing phase like the shadows of the moon.
