An Open Letter to My Brain

Please start working soon

Dear useless brain,

Look at the image above. I know you love dogs and you cannot get one someday unless you work!

I love you because without you I would not be in this world, alive and well. I would still be in the world, but I would not be aware of that. You’re the only reason I can think properly and write. So, in a way you are criticizing yourself. Therefore, you can’t get mad.

You’ve been with me throughout school and college. Because of you, I got my job and now you are so kind as to help me with writing and art.

You’ve been with me for the last 25+ years, but I think you’ve worked properly for only half of that time. Maybe even less than half. More like one quarter. Or 1/8th.

All the other times, you were too busy daydreaming and overthinking to realize what is really going on around you. I wish you had listened to the professor when he was talking about a dull topic instead of thinking about the novel we will read after we get home.

But all that is in the past, and I am ready to forgive you. If you could just focus for a while. It is not as hard as it seems.

I agree the movie was very interesting and you have some deep thinking to do about that. You also have to think about hundred different scenarios, the chances of which happening are almost negligible.

I agree the colleagues are rude and you have to overthink that too. I get it. Everyone does that but can you cut the imaginary conversation in half?

But I would really appreciate it if you do all that after I have written something. Because you’re never going to say something to them, why ruin a good night’s sleep and the time when you can write?

You kept me up till 2 in the night, thinking about all the stupid things that happened years ago. I still woke up at 6 because I have to write before going to the office. I needed your help, and all you gave me was five unfinished drafts.

It would have felt better if those drafts had over 5 lines each. Maybe two paragraphs would have been nice. Now, it feels like I have five headlines, not articles.

That too after sacrificing 1.5 hours of sleep.

I would have been sleeping right now, but you don’t even want that. You wanted to write and here I am at 6 telling you to start working and all you can think about is ice cream.

All shops are closed. You’re not getting ice cream first thing in the morning. You ate what was left at home in the night.

Now I have to get ready so we can go to work. The place where you will keep bothering me, thinking about the things you can write. The writing we could have done in these 1.5 hours. 1.5 hours which we are never getting back.

If you could just start working now, that will be great. Maybe we can write a tiny article. Just one paragraph would be great.

Your owner,

Where you are living for the last 25+ years for free.
