OPEN LETTERS
An Open Letter to Democrats
You have to vote again.
Dear Democrats, Progressives & Anyone Who Voted for Biden,
I know. I know.
You’re disappointed with Democrats.
You want the spending bill passed to fund things like climate action, healthcare, childcare.
You want voting rights protected.
You want student debt cancelled.
You want this administration to actually fulfill the promises they made you.
So do I!
We all know politicians over promise and under deliver, sort of like sex with someone who tells you that they’ll go all night long.
We know that’s a lie, but it is expected that something actually gets done.
And the man responsible for making sure nothing gets done? Joe Manchin.
Luckily, when you’re being intimate with someone, you don’t have to deal with Joe Manchin.
At least, I seriously hope he isn’t blocking you from having a good time.
Wait, on second thought, he literally is blocking us from having a good time.
A good time knowing our student loan debt is erased so we can actually save for the future.
A good time knowing we are fighting to save the planet so we can actually have a future.
And a good time knowing that we’re still going to have a fucking democracy in the future.
So when we air our grievances about Democrats, let’s remember Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema as the ones literally at the center of blocking our good times.
And a way to make those two irrelevant?
Vote.
Okay. I know. I know.
“I already voted. You haven’t done what I want. You want me to vote again? Why?”
Because the Republican party continually dismantles any progress Democrats have made or will make, and if (or when) they win again, they will dismantle democracy itself.
Sadly, too many voters don’t care about that issue, but you really really should.
It’s good to be upset and want to continue to push the Democratic party to be more progressive.
I’m on board for that, but I do know that it takes time.
Emphasis on the word time.
I know there is reason to be disappointed, but can we please remember it has also been just a year into this administration?
I know time is both going slowly and fast. (How is it already 2022? The Iowa Caucus seems like last week. But also, how is this year not over yet?)
So instead of throwing away your vote and hope, remember that we have a way to get student debt cancelled, climate change funding, and voting rights secured.
Elect more progressive Democrats, like John Fetterman in the Pennsylvania senate race. Charles Booker in the Kentucky senate race. Re-electing Reverend Warnock in Georgia.
Democrats need to break out of the constant cycle of voting once for a president, sitting out the midterms, losing the majority, complaining that our president isn’t doing anything (while ignoring how the House and Senate work), sitting out an election, letting Republicans destroy everything for years, finally voting again, and complain when everything isn’t fixed within a month.
Democrats are like the staff who has to open a restaurant after Republicans closed the night before, but when they arrive to work in the morning, the building is burned down.
And voters show up in an hour and complain, “where’s my brunch?”
Oh, just give us a moment to rebuild the restaurant quick.
Sincerely,
Someone Who Understands the Importance of Voting in EVERY Election
