An Introduction: Sandy Barrett

Can I help you make a difference?

Stick with me; writing itself can be hard, but writing about myself is a challenge I don’t relish.

I started my adult life as the majority of people in the US, looking to move up the corporate ladder and prove myself.

Along the way, I found I was never satisfied, and wondered if what I was doing was what I wanted to spend most of my waking hours on.

I’ve had many different careers; buyer, retail manager, supervisor, administrator of dispute resolution cases, victim advocate, and child advocate.

But only my volunteer work with foster children gave me some of the meaning I was looking for. Between wanting more of that meaning and my disillusionment with the business world, I signed up for an MBA/MPA. Surely that would help me to find or start a business that meant something!

I love learning and helping others. After graduation, I soon found that the change of career wasn’t going to make me happy either. I was helping other people but soon got tired of office politics and the feeling that red tape was holding us back.

Writing became my outlet for helping others. There are so many issues that I’m passionate about, and I can’t focus on all of them and make a difference. So I use my writing to help others find ways they can make a difference in issues they care about or that personally affect them.

Most of my writing can be found on my website at makeachangeproject.com. I write posts on an issue and then provide actionable ways to do something about it. I’ve been writing on Medium since February of 2019 and have had a number of my pieces curated. I’m grateful to Dr Mehmet Yildiz for acceptance as a writer for Illumination and look forward to contributing to the success of the publication.

If you get a chance to read through some of my posts, you’ll quickly see that climate change is a recurring theme. I’m also currently writing a reference book for people that want to do their part to slow climate change but don’t know-how.

I’m also grateful for my husband and son who put up with my passion projects. My ability to jump into all kinds of rabbit holes at any moment surely has given them some stress. And for my friend Feather🕊tales who have provided constant encouragement to continue. She writes beautiful poetry and I encourage everyone to take a look at her posts.
