Summary

The text is a critique of intellectual snobbery, highlighting the pitfalls of an individual who uses their intellect to dominate conversations and belittle others.

Abstract

The poem "An Intellectual Snob" delves into the behavior of a person who, despite their intellectual gifts, fails to engage with others' perspectives, instead using their intelligence manipulatively. This individual is characterized by a belligerent insistence on their own views, a condescending attitude, and a failure to recognize how this alienates them from their audience. The poem suggests that such a person is ultimately ignored or dismissed by listeners, despite their attempts to force their opinions on others. The author, J., expresses gratitude to Dr. Mehmet Yildiz and the Illumination team for publishing their work on the Illumination platform.

Opinions

  • The intellectual snob is portrayed as someone who is ignorant to other points of view, demonstrating a lack of insight.
  • Such individuals are seen as weak in social interactions, particularly in their inability to listen to others.
  • They engage in arguments not for the sake of understanding but for manipulation, aiming to coerce others into their line of thinking.
  • The snob's condescending tone and failure to acknowledge the value of different perspectives leads to their own alienation.
  • The intellectual snob is perceived as boring and self-absorbed, pushing their point of view to the point of being likened to a spoilt child.
  • The audience's response to the intellectual snob is one of disengagement, nodding without interest, and ultimately turning away.

Having the gift of intellect Then to find oneself ignorant To points of view from another Shows great lack of insight.

In social interaction proving a weakness Within themselves, unable to listen While others offer up theory’s No matter how prudent.

The intellectual snob Finds argument for the sake of manipulation, To steer the conversation round To their way of thinking in a Most belligerent manner.

Condescending tones, Failing to notice their Own alienation from those around Bored with one so blessed, The owner of natural intellect.

Assuring their audience They could do worse than allow Their influence for change of heart Through continuous demanding, Their point of view is the only point of view Behaving like a spoilt child Until the very bored listener Nods, turns off, turns away. Again.

Thank you Dr Mehmet Yildiz and the Illumination team for giving my words a platform here at Illumination… Thank you all for reading and your valuable time. J.
