An Injury Incurred On International Women’s Day: A Reminder for Drivers to Be Aware

Whenever you venture out on the road, you put yourself at risk. You can mitigate this by practicing mindfulness.

🕯️ On International Women’s Day, I got injured. (*Trigger warning* you will see bruising in the video.)

😔 While I am ok, I’m also not exactly or entirely ok. I will heal with time. But the incident and its aftermath have been incredibly jarring. I am a very conscientious and mindful biker. But when a driver isn’t paying attention and didn’t stop his turn, the only thing I could do was stop my bike abruptly.

🚲I flew off my bike and got some serious impact wounds. The driver’s initial instinct was to say he didn’t do anything wrong (though I’d clearly just flown off my bike and was lying on the street because of his carelessness). Only after another (male) biker and I explained that bikes have the right of way in bike lanes and that as a driver he needs to look out, *and* after I’d taken a picture of his license plate, did he then apologize.

👁️‍🗨️Men, drivers, everyone: YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO MINDFUL.

🧘‍♂️ Please, let’s all do better. I’m going to have to take the next week plus at a slower pace because of this incident and its physical and psychological toll.

👏🏼 We all make mistakes, but this is hugely symbolic of how we as a society, individually and collectively, need to work on being more mindful and intentional. When you make mistakes, own those mistakes. Take accountability. Learn from your mistakes.
