An Illuminating Story About Book Publishing On Medium
For writers of the longer read
A year ago I joined Medium and began to submit to Illumination. Over the course of the year a great many thing have been achieved both for Illumination and for myself. My successes have been very much connected to those of Illumination and its affiliate publications. We have become joined at the hip as it were.
However, one thing that I felt was missing was a home for longer reads. Nevertheless, I did publish quite a few short stories in the hope that they would get some attention, which they duly did, though not as much as I had hoped.
Feeling that my short stories had a lot of potential in a market dedicated to longer reads, I put all the stories together for two volumes ('The Mystic Rainbow') which I then published on Amazon, under my other name William P.O'Neill. Once I got into that mode of publishing I also published two volumes of poetry,(Flowers in the Dirt') a book of humorous articles ('Time for a Laugh') a book of three short stories called 'The Supernatural Adventures of Katie', and two other short stories called 'The Island' and 'The Opus Connection'.
All of the above short stories and poems had been originally published on Illumination. Once published on Amazon I took the pieces down off Illumination since I didn't want to encounter any potential problems of double publication. Recently, with the launch of Illumination Book Chapters on Illumination, I saw some excellent reasons to bring some of those stories back home.
So far I have brought back, chapter by chapter, three stories; 'The Man With An Alien Heart', 'The Supernatural Jacket' and 'Extra-terrestrial Contact.' I am still in the process of adding chapters from these stories on a daily basis. I have to say, so far I have been very impressed with the results.
First of all, all of the stories were almost immediately curated. This is great as it means the stories are being presented to a much wider audience than they were before.
Second, this re-publication has resulted in some additional Amazon sales.
Third, I am now getting more attention due to increased visibility in a publication dedicated to the longer reads.
Fourth, I am now also getting some excellent Beta feedback.
Of course, since Medium changed how they pay writers, now based on reading times rather than claps, I do expect to see my earnings increase. Indeed, I have already seen an increase on my monthly payments, and the first month of me submitting my chapters isn't over yet.
My next move will be to see if I can now explore introducing new stories for their first publication here on Illumination Book Chapters. I see this as a great opportunity to test the water with Beta readers to see if the stories grab their attention and take seed.
The first year at Illumination has seen phenomenal growth in terms of readership and new affiliated publications. For me those publications are all doing an amazing job for writers, but I have to say that Illumination Book Chapters has blown me away with some very early positive signs of being an enormous success for all who are connected to it, be they writers or editors.
At the start of this Illuminating journey I never for one moment ever imagined just how big it was going to be. However, I did make a personal decision to jump on board and see if I could do anything to help it along. I have to say, that has been one of my better decisions in life.
We have an incredible leader in Dr Mehmet Yildiz, a truly amazing team of editors and an awesome resource of brilliant writers. There are now no less than six Illumination publications, each with its own unique mission statement and crystal clear brand. What they all have in common is a commitment to help writers to be the best writers that they can be.
Here, everybody has the opportunity to reach their full potential regardless of age, race, colour, nationality, gender or even religion. And Illumination Book Chapters is another hat in the self same ring with exactly the same mission. If you are a published or an aspiring writer, get on it now, because it is my firm belief that it really is going to set the world on fire by reaching all of its ambitions in a very short time.
