An Eye For Random Objects

There’s beauty in everything around us, even random abstract objects

Whenever my husband and I are out on a photo trip, I keep my eyes open for two things: anything I can capture with my macro lens or random objects that make for interesting images.

Take the image above: we drove out to the harbor and walked on the docks. Everything was painted in battleship grey, except for these… yes, what would you call that? A valve opener maybe? No idea, but I liked the splash of color amongst the sea of grey.

I took the image below on that same day, and would say these could have used a bit of paint, although I love the rusty look.

When looking through my images, it seemed I have a knack of finding things that point into the air. I love photographing objects or plants etched against the sky.

One evening, my husband and I took a stroll through our neighborhood. We both had our cameras with us and I wanted to experiment with the nighttime setting on my camera.

Laundromats are not a common appearance in our country, but the machines you can see in the photo on the left have popped up at several gas stations in the past years. We actually thought no one would ever use it, but have passed it many times since and saw the machines running, or people putting their laundry in it.

Near to where we live, there are a couple of blocks of flats. Just behind the one you see in the picture is the one where my mom lived. Sadly, this one — twelve stories high — has become known as the suicide flat, as it’s the highest building in our town, and it was easily accessible to anyone.

Towards the end of the corona year of 2020, there were two people who jumped from it in one week. Just horrible. Measures had been taken to make sure not just anyone can access the building, and the last suicide had been over a year ago.

Speaking of Covid, before it hit, we used to go to a roadside restaurant which served the most delicious salads. Sadly, the restaurant never opened again when things sort of got back to normal.

I took the above image in that restaurant for an assignment for the photography course I did back then. The assignment was to capture lines and planes in an interesting composition, and where I took several photos in different places, the one above was the one I liked most. And I still do!

So there you have it — whenever I am out with my camera, it’s not only nature, animals or architecture capturing my attention but also random objects I can capture in an interesting composition.

Hope you enjoyed!
