Anyone who has an account on Instagram has undoubtedly found a post from showing their naked body. It is also highly likely that the person responsible for the publication has suffered censorship in this great social network. Nudity is a complicated topic, and to a certain extent, a subjective issue. If you have received a notification of censorship or have seen content that is considered “explicit or sexual,” I invite you to continue reading to learn some guidelines to determine if that content has violated the “Community Rules” of the platform.

First, how do you define a naked person? According to Merriam-Webster, it is a person who is devoid of a cover or is not covered by clothing or drape. When you read the above, you realize that a naked person is not one who wears tiny underwear. This is where the differences in concepts begin. On the one hand, some people consider that it is not nude content to publish a photograph with that super fashionable and attractive garment that was acquired. On the other hand, we have a platform that has its criteria for nudity.

Anyway, when publishing content on a social platform, Instagram, it is essential to know its way of distinguishing each type of content. The norms or standards can be like those of any person, as it can be the opposite.

I am fond of having things clear, but what happens if, despite having guidelines as a social network, does not respect or evaluate the published content equally? Then, annoyance is generated and what happened to Celeste Barber takes place.

Celeste Barber is an Australian comedian. On Instagram, publish reinterpretation or parody about scenes of people from the show business and outside of it. It is sometimes ridiculing or exaggerating the scenes. This information is necessary to understand its content and what is coming in this post.

Celeste Barber published a photograph divided into two parts. In the first part (left half) of the picture, a person is posing, half-covered in what appears to be a nightgown. The person has uncovered the lateral aspect of the body and a chest. Her chest was half-covered with her right hand. Celeste Barber is in the same position in the remaining half of the photograph and uncovered with the same part of her body.

The difference between the two people in the photograph is the facial gesture. Celeste’s gesture exposed her pain, not dissatisfaction, not something sexual. Also, the subtitle of the image corroborated what Celeste was manifesting with its gesture.

Well, Instagram censored that post because it had violated the “Community Guidelines” about nude content. This is where my comment on the subjectivity of nudity and the platforms’ standards on these issues fits.

It is interesting how Instagram handles a double standard of nude or explicit content. There are countless more explicit images on Instagram than Celeste Barber’s, and they are not censored. Also, many people have had to experience censorship of their content.

To understand the violations in Celeste’s post and to know the Instagram standard, I looked up the “Instagram Community Guidelines” on their help portal.

In the “Post photos and videos that are appropriate for a diverse audience” section, mention that content that shows “sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks,” nor nipples is not allowed. Let’s see, Celeste Barber’s post does not show part of the body that matches some of those mentioned in this section.

Nor is it that this section of Instagram has detailed the type of content not supported for the platform. Above the word “nudity” in the same section links to a Community Standards resource on Facebook. Do not be surprised; Facebook owns Instagram. This section can help you know the possible reason for your content’s censorship or know what content not to post on the platform.

Pay attention to the following list of content “not allowed” on Facebook and Instagram to see if you fall into any of these statements.

Visible genitalia; visible anus or fully nude close-ups of buttocks; uncovered female nipples; explicit or implied sexual intercourse; erections; use of sex toys; squeezing of female breasts.

To learn more about the content, visit the “Community Guidelines” section of the platform. I only listed the ones that could be most helpful to you or me.

By reviewing the Community standards, it is possible to realize that Celeste’s post violated the standard of “Squeezing female breasts.” It is a static photograph that does not allow us to see if, indeed, such an act exists. It is absurd, under the section of content not allowed, Facebook mentions that it is allowed “Content posted in a satirical or humorous context.” This is where the content of Celeste takes place.

If you post content that can be considered sexual or nude, it is crucial to consider the platforms’ rules. Instagram and Facebook have notable flaws in classifying allowed content, and those that violate their standards. If your content adds value, knowing the rules will help you defend yourself against acts of censorship. Please do not rule out that the platforms’ algorithms are the first to analyze your content when publishing it. Surely you have heard it on the Internet; yes, Instagram likely has a double standard for ranking content.
