An Enchanting Visit to Bird Paradise in Singapore’s Mandai Wildlife Reserve

Singapore Diaries: Inspiring Travel Through Photography

“Singapore is the happiest place in Asia.” — Dan Buettner

During our family vacation in Singapore in November 2023, my husband and I, along with my cousin and her husband, had an incredible time at Bird Paradise, a hidden gem tucked away in the Mandai Wildlife Reserve.

Known as one of the world’s top bird parks, this place truly exceeded our expectations. It offered the perfect combination of fascinating wildlife and modern amenities.

My cousin’s husband, a local resident and nature enthusiast, highly recommended the Bird Paradise experience, and we were thrilled to join them for a day of adventure.

In May 2023, Bird Paradise made its debut as the newest addition to the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, replacing the Jurong Bird Park. This expansive facility, spread over 42 acres, now stands alongside the Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Wonders, and the upcoming Rainforest Wild Park.

One noteworthy feature of Bird Paradise is its larger and more spacious aviaries compared to the Jurong Bird Park.

Mike Barclay, the Group CEO of Mandai Wildlife Group, expressed that the animal care team and veterinarians have been diligently undertaking the substantial responsibility of relocating over 3,000 birds from Jurong to the Mandai Wildlife Reserve.

To make the most of our wildlife adventure, we combined our trip to Bird Paradise with a visit to the Night Safari at the Singapore Zoo. The combination provided us with a unique opportunity to witness a wide range of animals, each park offering its own unique species.

The seamless blend of experiences made it a truly enriching journey for both nature enthusiasts and families alike.

Our Visit

Bird Paradise’s thoughtful design took us on a thematic journey through various habitats. Towering trees, cascading waterfalls, and an array of captivating bird species surrounded us, creating an immersive atmosphere.

We were immediately captivated by the lively penguins near the entrance and the graceful flamingos set against a picturesque waterfall. It was just the beginning of an extraordinary visit. Observing the penguins diving into crystal-clear waters and gliding with elegance was truly therapeutic.

It felt like a special peek into their natural habitat, leaving a lasting impression and adding an extra layer of wonder to our day.

The park’s open layout facilitates close-up views of numerous birds, allowing visitors to easily observe them perched on trees from the different observation decks within the aviaries. The birds flying within meters of us added an incredible sense of wonder and closeness to nature.

We were able to get up close to them and capture beautiful photographs. It was a delight for us all.

The park’s modern facilities enhanced the overall experience, making it a haven for those who love birdwatching.

One standout aspect of Bird Paradise was its attention to visitor comfort. Strategically located air-conditioned rest areas between aviaries provided a much-needed break from the tropical climate, allowing us to explore the park at our own pace. It was a thoughtful touch that added to our enjoyment.

We did, however, encounter a peculiar incident during our visit. While we were appreciating a particular bird, another member of the same species became jealous and aggressively attacked it, tearing off its feathers. The keeper quickly intervened and cautioned us to maintain a safe distance from the birds.

Finally, we had the opportunity to witness a captivating bird show and even take pictures with the animals after the performance.

In spite of the occasionally overwhelming tropical heat and intense sun, our time at the park was rewarding and pleasurable.

Please take a moment to enjoy these photos I captured at Bird Paradise.

A Nature Lover’s Paradise

Situated in the serene Mandai Wildlife Reserve alongside Singapore Zoo and Night Safari, Bird Paradise Park is a remarkable 17-hectare aviary wonderland. It is home to an impressive collection of 3,500 birds representing a staggering 400 species.

The park introduced two exciting new avian shows, namely Predators on Wings and Wings of the World, which offer a fresh twist while retaining the best aspects of their previous bird presentations.

What sets apart this place is its eight walk-through aviaries, each inspired by a different part of the world. One can imagine strolling through dense African rainforests, South American wetlands, and Southeast Asian paddy fields, all within arm’s reach.

The Heart of Africa particularly captivates visitors with its expansive 1.55-hectare space, making it the largest aviary exclusively dedicated to African birds. This marvelous exhibit showcases over 800 vibrant species, including Turacos and bee-eaters, who delight audiences with their colorful plumage and graceful aerial displays.

Yet, Bird Paradise Park is not solely about providing a spectacle. The park is deeply committed to avian conservation, with an impressive 24% of their bird residents listed as threatened species — the highest percentage of any zoological park.

The Winged Sanctuary focuses on birds of significant conservation value, such as the critically endangered Philippine Eagle and Vietnam Pheasant.

In addition to bird-watching, the park offers interactive experiences, behind-the-scenes tours, and exclusive glimpses into the Avian Healthcare and Research Centre.

The Penguin Cove is a charming area featuring various penguin species where visitors can enjoy a meal while observing the delightful aquatic antics of these incredible creatures.
