An Elephant, a Baby, and a Pineapple
Inserted with crude firecrackers

I am grieved and shocked to know that a group of people caused the death of an innocent, passive, pregnant elephant by feeding the elephant with a pineapple filled with firecrackers. Such criminal acts against innocent animals are no different than acts of meditated murder against humans. Justice must prevail — Ratan Tata
A mother she was, Maybe with a trunk, A brushy tale, ivory teeth defunct.
Jungle her abode She roamed free, Nefarious humans Found some moments of glee.
The story, has a pineapple too, That tangy fruit what would it know, Cut and fitted with explosives crude, For wild boars and pigs to give it a go.
Carrying the baby womb intact, She traveled, her long ears flapped, Forest her home, Freedom entailed, A mistake one She crossed the fence…..
Crops are precious, Farmers’ life, Does that sanction needless strife, Crude bomb in tasty fruit, Annihilates the creator and her baby unborn.
Four days and counting submerged in lake, Wishing respite, unfathomable pain, Helpless, we all but watched in horror, How silently the immortal fell.
Every incident a Page One news For us to read and sometimes rue, Pick up our mug and hasten to leave,
To start our day — now that’s due!
Author’s Note: Around June 2020,a news surfaced about a pregnant elephant being killed after consuming fire-cracker fitted pineapple, done generally by farmers to save their crops from wild boars and pigs. The elephant spent four days in a lake, to probably ease her pain, before succumbing to her internal injuries.
It is useless to argue whose fault it was, when both sides have strong arguments to hold fort, but we can’t help mourning the loss of an elephant, who could have enjoyed the fruits of motherhood, and help in propagating a clan slowly diminishing from their sanctuary.
I chose this true incident to address this prompt because love for animals cannot just reside in our drawing rooms.Thinking of every animal walking this earth as our pet is the way forward for a more inclusive world.
Illustration: I used the deity form of the animal in question, for a specific reason, that people who are instrumental, knowingly or unknowingly, for this ghastly act, definitely have a photo of that demiurge form in their home, whom they worship…..Ironies of life!
Thank you Sharing Randomly Lorena for this prompt on pets/animals in our vicinity, preservation of which in some meaningful way has become imperative in this world, on the brink of degeneration.
