An April fool
Living the optimist’s life
Yes I am an April fool I am a sucker for the crocus I root hard for the tired grass As it peeks through the dirty snow I put away my wooly sweaters two weeks too early Yes I am an April fool I should recognize its pranks by now I should know that its marathon showers will come I should know that the frozen ground will heave and shudder That my hopes will get soaked and then puddle But I have chosen the optimist’s life I am not shaken by disappointment But stirred by the infinite possibilities of Spring I did not finish cynic’s school I’ll take the odds, I’ll bet on nature’s promise Happy to be an April fool
