Summary

Erika Burkhalter captures the tranquility and vibrancy of her garden through photography and poetry, reflecting on the zen-like moments and the intricate dance of nature.

Abstract

Erika Burkhalter's "An Afternoon in the Garden" is a serene exploration of nature's beauty as seen through the lens of her camera and the verses of her poetry. The article, adorned with stunning images of flora and fauna, showcases the garden as a sanctuary that offers solace and inspiration. Burkhalter's photographs, taken with a Nikon Z9 and a NIKKOR Z 100–400mm ƒ4.5–5.6 VR S lens, depict a variety of scenes, from the watchful "Big Red" in the orange tree to the delicate "Tiny Bells" and the vibrant "Gossamer Iris." Each image is accompanied by reflective musings that celebrate the simple yet profound moments in nature, such as the dance of hummingbirds, the feasting of finches, and the teasing of bees with the scent of lavender. The garden is personified as a place where every breath holds infinite possibilities and where even the smallest creatures, like a tiny bug on a purple bloom, are part of a larger, interconnected dance of life. Burkhalter's work invites readers to find their own moments of zen and to appreciate the fleeting beauty of the natural world.

An Afternoon in the Garden

Finding a little zen with my camera

A nod of lavender, a hint of breeze, a breath of spring, the buzz of bees, zen is in this very moment.

My garden is my sanctuary. It calms me, soothes my soul, and provides sanctuary to so many other creatures.

Every breath, every space between the breathes, holds room for an infinite number of possibilities, an infinite number of activities normally beyond the scope of our perception. Until we look a little closer….

Tucked away in the orange tree, “Big Red” watches, on high alert.

Far below, a tiny bug rests upon a purple bloom.

And a rival hummingbird dashes in for a quick dip.

Flounced skirts light up the darkest corner of the garden. A rose, so sweet. A dance with time. A moment frozen for eternity.

Freyja watches. Those eyes of liquid jade see every detail.

All things turn towards the sun.

And fairies dance with tiny bells.

While finches feast on tender seeds.

And paper petals unwind, floating like gossamer into the afternoon light.

And ajuga bursts free from the cold, cold earth, springing into the warmth of spring.

And lavender-scented wisps of wind tease the bees with offerings of more to come.

But nature is fickle sometimes.
